The world is live and here to stay! Thankfully my property stayed untouched from the server saving bug. I noticed 709's being wiped out and back to the base seed. I also saw it did a scheduled backup and all looked well for it at the 1450 backup. So I do hope this was just an oddity.

So if you were wondering about the lighting bug:
http://turtle2472.com/an/lightingbugstill.png

Notice the blackness in the block NEXT to the torch. After I took this shot, that cow walked through the shadows and turned the same blackness it would in night without torches. Oh well.

I'm pretty sure this is the same bug that plagued the top of the hotel/post office with hostiles back in Cactuar. I think it was introduced with the "anvil" chunk format that broke up the vertical column chunks into shallower sections.

Thanks for kicking off the new thread, turtle. :) I'll update the sticky thread and other "readme" pages later tonight with the correct server information.

Now that we're back on the "vanilla" Minecraft, I'm able to use Bukkit as the back-end server. This means that we once again have access to a bunch of neat commands that are offered by various Bukkit plugins.

The next time you're online, check out /help to see a list of some commands. Most notably, I've installed the Essentials plugin (see command reference (http://wiki.ess3.net/wiki/Command_Reference)) that provides some interesting commands like:

/back takes you back to where you died so you can try to fetch your loot
/afk toggles the AFK display (but it doesn't act like you're asleep like the other AFK we used to have)
/getpos tells you where you or another player is
/time tells you the in-world time; handy so you don't have to keep a watch/clock around while mining
/mail allows you to send messages to players even if they're offline
/sethome and /home allow you to set a home for warping and go to it (note: I haven't tested this)

There are a lot more cheat commands that Essentials offers that I'll be turning off once I get proper permissions set up on the server. We're running a pretty basic setup right now just so I could get things started. Please be a good citizen and try to resist the temptation to cheat until I get them locked down. :)

Essentials also includes a basic set of economy commands that creates an in-game currency. For any item, you can try /worth to see how much the server thinks it's worth. You can use /balance to see how much your bank account has. When you /sell an item, the server takes it from you and deposits the appropriate amount of money into your bank account. Your bank account stays around even when you die and respawn. Once you have money in your account, you can /pay another player for goods, services, etc. Another use of the economy that I haven't yet tinkered with is paid server services. For instance, maybe we enable arbitrary warping, but you have to pay something like a $10 toll each time you warp? Or maybe enable a command to repair your current tool and charge $50 per use? I'll think about ways to enable the economy commands that might make things interesting.

Lava + /back = hilarity.

So, I tried this out last night on my local test server, and it's not as bad as you might guess! When I used /back after stepping into a lava pool, it put me back *outside* of the pool just before where I stepped in. My stuff was gone, of course, but I was able to continue wandering around.

I found a swamp shack while I was out adventuring earlier today. I did post coordinates on a sign so we can all find it again after the map updates later this evening.

Now that I've had some time to experiment and configure, lets talk Bukkit commands!

I've installed a few plugins to keep things interesting. Just as before, I may add more if I find some that I think we'd enjoy. Maybe we'll add warping or multiple worlds. We'll see. Here's a summary of what we have today:

Essentials (Core) (http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/essentials/) is a mixed bag of utility commands.

/hat lets you wear a fancy hat.
/time gives you the in-game world time so you don't have to carry a watch.
/afk toggles your AFK display. Unfortunately, this does not simulate being in bed like it used to.
/compass tells you which way you're facing.
/depth tells you how deep you are in the world.
/getpos tells you where you are in the world.
/help lists the commands available to you.
/mail lets you send and read mail. You can send messages to people offline using mail.
/msg <player> <message> (or /tell, /m, /t, or /whisper) sends a private message to another player.
/r <message> (or /reply) replies to the last person who sent you a private message.
/nick <name> lets you give yourself a nickname. Nicknames are always preceded by ~ when displayed.
/realname <nickname> lets you see the real name of someone from their nickname.
/suicide kills you.
/back warps you back to where you last died. Good for fetching your loot or exacting vengeance on your killer.

Essentials (Economy) (http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/essentials/) provides a basic economy if we want to have one. We can also set up ways to *buy* items from the server (think rarities like glowstone or quartz), but we'll deal with that later.

/balance or /bal shows your server-wide bank account balance.
/worth shows how much the item in your hand is worth if you were to sell it to the server.
/sell <item> <amount> sells items from your inventory back to the server for a cash deposit into your account.
/repair repairs the item in your hand in exchange for a flat $100 (regardless of item type or damage amount) from your bank account.

LWC (http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/lwc/) lets you protect your things so no one else can go through them. Protected chests and doors have the added benefit of being indestructible by anyone but you.

/cprivate locks a chest or door so only you can open it.
/cpassword <password> sets a password lock on a chest or door that must be entered to open it.
/cpublic sets a permission on a chest or door so anyone can open it and no one can use /cprivate or /cpassword on it, effectively identifying it as a shared/community resource
/cremove removes one of the above protection types if you have access to it.
/climits shows you how many protections you have left.

WorldEdit (http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/worldedit/) has a bunch of creative-style commands, but I'm only exposing these two to repair damage.

/fixwater <radius> fixes water flows in the radius around you. Good for patching surface currents over deep water.
/fixlava <radius> fixes lava flows the same way.

billybobsky
2013-07-07, 13:55
Note: the fixlava and fixwater commands are also very useful in making pools of the liquids from a single source... (which in a way is infinite fuel)...

Owen said you're a big meanie, brad, and if he could, he'd lead a hundred creepers to your house. :) He kids, of course. He knows what happens when he breaks stuff.

So- what' the consensus? I've kinda let him do his own thing- I know he's shading Spec pretty closely, but is he behaving himself and being a "fine guy" and not a "mad guy"?

Owen mistaked your house for his. I guess they kind've look the same. :D

He needs to get a clue wrt to space and where he is on the map. I think he'd be better close to town with all his neediness. We could keep a better eye on him that way.

I don't have too much of a problem with him on. He's pretty fucking annoying sometimes when he jumps up and down in front of your face while you're crafting or filling furnaces, but I guess I could pretend I'm hammering the table with my sword, and if he's in the way so be it. :D

There's a Spawn Area Nether Portal below the (under construction) Space Needle now. It initially spawned 2 portals in mid-air next to each other () but I moved the floating platform to the exact coords ( /8) it needed to be after some heavy ghast dodging. :|

I've started 2 paths off of opposing sides, and I ask that any other paths built to homes or outlier bases or whatever be built off of those paths. I'd like to keep the other 2 walls clear, as I may revamp the design in the future. :)

There's a chest with cobble and glass, but be sure to bring more. Ghasts seem like they spawn a bit more frequently and I drank lava a few times trying to get the little I have build up and ready. :D

Also, baby skeletons in the Nether.... :(

I needed a bunch sand to turn into glass (as I always do ;)) and Brad offered to nuke a chunk of desert after some strip-mining. So, I have my handful of chests that I need, but mining it left a *lot* of sandstone blocks open to the air. I took a full chest or so, but there's still a ton left for anyone that wants some easily-mined sandstone blocks for later.

It's in the desert behind Turtle's new house, far West edge (http://mcmaps.applenova.com/#layerId=LayerA&worldX=-163&worldY=0&worldZ=559&zoom=4).

I'm set for sand for a while, so Brad, you can nuke at your leisure if no one is interested in the sandstone. Thanks! :)

* I was keeping to the West edge so it wouldn't be such a pain to nuke, so if anyone goes in for sand like I did (I didn't rape it, so there's still crazy amounts), try to keep to that side. I was using the natural arch as a reference point and just stayed West of it.

Now that the Space Needle and Nether Portal are finished, I think I may put in a beach-path running from my house to near Spawn. I'll stop well short of your place Brad so you can design it the way you like, but I'm going to run straight in front your place, RS. I hope that's OK.

So admittedly I havn't been on much lately, but bruce your house and current project is right over my mine, and I had to dig my way back into my mine shaft to get out of the ground today. I hate to ask you to do this because i know you've put alot of time into that shaft, but would you please move it?

billybobsky
2013-07-22, 02:02
Which shaft? My under water thing? I don't have a mineshaft as it were...

In any event, I was told that my locale was unclaimed, and none of it was lit, so I will not be moving the underwater thing, but my foot print will not extend beyond it much towards the shore -- besides its a tree farm for anyone's use... The house I will eventually build there will mostly be on that hill...

Edit: I have made a refined entrance to your mineshaft and the tree farm steveuh. Just go down the stairs, your new entrance is off the right side of the lower part...

Since you will likely find that the tree farm extends through some (but only a small fraction) of the cave system down there, might I recommend moving your mining towards your backyard? that way, you won't come in conflict with the under water bits. I will also try to keep my mining under my house and towards the wilderness...

Edit2: Since I am still recovering from a summer cold, I've gone through and walled off what caves I found crossing into the tree farm rectilinear prism. I might have missed some... but if you encounter a cobble wall don't go through it, it isn't worth your while, all mineral wealth will have been harvested...

Are you kidding me? I must have just missed it when I was searching for one a couple days ago - I was in the middle of those plains, no idea how I didn't spot it.

ADDENDUM: The cobble tower with a torch on top near (256, 36) is near the entrance to a cave with a zombie spawner that I've set up as a rudimentary XP farm. I didn't get a chance to set up signs leading to it last time I was on; will do so when I get the chance, if nobody else gets around to it first.

I've built the framework for a portal right there in my skellie grinder, but haven't yet lit it up because I need to gather more obsidian in order to build its nether analogue. If anybody is particularly anxious to add it as a node to the nether network feel free - I'm pretty close to spawn so it shouldn't be more than 30 blocks or so from spawn (rough guess).

Might add one of those enchanting chambers in there too.

PLEASE NOTE that I've put in a chest and a lava garbage chute. Please discard all the junk bows that you receive. Bones too, probably. Otherwise, perhaps we can cut in a storage chamber in the area behind the kill box.

Villager in Nether!

Guess they can go through like pigmen now. He hit flowing lava and died a horrible death.

So, multiple zombie rushes combined with at least 5 more villagers wandering into the nether resulted in the village population dwindling to a mere one farmer.

I've moved the village portal into a basement behind an iron door so villagers can't go roast with the pigmen. I also cheat spawned in a few villagers to get the village back to a sustainable population.

Also, the nether side of that portal took a serious ghast beating. I had to patch it with cobble. It ain't pretty. :(

The Village compound is coming along nicely. Mr Noodle tried to get got out a few times. So did the unnamed and unsaddled horse. I had to push it back in the wall after breaking through it first. Then rebuild the wall behind him. Seems they are able to jump angles and one block with ease. So I had to remove a few "stepping" dirt blocks from the wall. Also had to remove a few from the points where the terrain level shifts.

If you put a block against the wall so you can climb up it, please remove it to keep in the locals.

Yeah. It's one of those images that burned into our collective memories as part of the horrible centuries-long racial conflict in the US. Rarely was the government known for hangings. It's more associated with racial hate groups like the ku klux klan and backwoods xenophobic rednecks. The klan was still lynching people late into the 20th century.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a good analogy to convey the effect, but think of it as something like putting up a building with a swastika on it. Sure, it has a long history in Indian and east Asian religions and cultures, but to a lot of westerners, it's just the flag of the Nazi party. (wooo godwin's law!!)

If it was a creeper or zombie up there I wouldn't have had much of a reaction (except of course that it's taking up valuable real estate in town :p :D ) ... even though they look much more like humans and a possible lynch. But a dog or cat and I would've taken it down immediately. Go figure.

I made a comment to Drew in-game that it wasn't quite as bad as T's Animal Auschwitz, so I guess you see where my sympathy lies. ;)

It's just a game, of course, but that doesn't mean that seeing the animals doing something funny or unexpected hasn't endeared their little blocky selves to me somewhat.

Take the Nether path past the Village portal. Easy to find. Also, since I always seem to lose track of space when sand mining, there's a flaming n00b tower on top of the portal hut. It'll help find your way back. :)

@ Owen - I left you a in-game mail, but thought I'd put this here too. Also, I needed to start brewing some potions for my lengthy trips into the Nether looking for wither skellies, so I now have a brewing room underneath my place for anyone that needs it (it's on the pumpkin/melon level). I get the occasional slime, but never any bad baddies. It's well lit when I'm growing trees, but since large mushrooms have to be so many blocks apart (5 for red, 7 for brown) I had to remove a bunch and stagger the light sources. If I were going to alternate between trees and shrooms all the time I might install redstone lamps with switches depending on what I'm growing, but for now torches are fine. :)

As long as the torches are placed 7 spaces or less from each other I don't seem to have a problem. That is, i-------i, but that's really only good for rows like plantings or skywalks. You couldn't light a field like that. It'd need one in the center of the 9x9 square.

If there are enough people on later tonight that are game then we could do it. The pit's probably deep enough as it is, plus there's a mineshaft ~8-10 blocks beneath the floor that I really don't want to fall into while doing battle. ;)

Drew - if possible I try to come in from the sides 1 block below the spawner. That way it's easy to place torches on the spawner through a 1 block hole cut in the wall. More difficult with cave spiders, but if you can place a torch on top of the spawner from above beforehand it helps minimize the spawning a bit.

If I may make a personal suggestion for this fight, given how pathetically easy the Wither bosses were to defeat with our super-enchanted armor and weapons: let's give the dragon a fighting chance and make this fight fun. No (or weak) enchantments on weapons and armor, especially if we get a lot of people in the group. It should be a battle, not a slaughter.

Oh, and I'll be recording the fight and posting it to YouTube afterward, so we should try to make it entertaining. :D

So, when are we doing this thing? Maybe tomorrow (Saturday), around when we were originally planning to do the Wither fight? Or maybe Sunday afternoon?

Next round: we're taking on the Enderdragon! I've got almost enough Eyes of Ender to open up the End Portal (if anyone has an Ender Pearl or two to contribute, that should be enough), and the stronghold has already been located in a forest to the southwest of spawn.

This did not happen last night, and it's not going to happen today either, conflicting schedules and other chores. Stay tuned.

Is this event postponed indefinitely, or are there any plans for this weekend?

On a mostly unrelated note, I've resurrected the plugin I wrote ages ago for making custom recipes (chiefly used for repairing tools before we had better repair functionality), and I've added one very important (to me!) recipe:

stone slab + stone slab = double slab

I wish I'd thought of this before I'd set down couple thousand odd half-blocks.... better late than never, I suppose. :)

So, by consensus (where by "consensus" I mean "only one person on the server suggested a time so I went with it"), we're starting off at about 4pm EDT. I suggest meeting up near a landmark (say, the Space Needle or the Marketplace) so we can all head off for the stronghold together without getting lost.

If anyone has any better ideas, let me know. Also, anyone who wants to get in on the group voice chat (I think we'll go with Skype unless anyone else has a preference), PM me and we'll get that set up as well. Remember, this is being recorded for posterity, so those who can't make it can enjoy the show on YouTube afterward.

Enderdragon battle: complete! I got the whole thing on video (including the trek to the stronghold, which was a bit of a journey in itself), including commentary by myself, Drew, and Bruce.

One thing I realized when viewing the video afterward was that I accidentally left the debug overlay on for almost the entire video after I turned it on to help find the stronghold entrance. Just...ignore it when you watch the video on YouTube later, OK? ;)

Could we do it all over again? It was fun, and I'd like to do it with more people on the Skype call.

OR, alternately, just have everybody go out on an adventure somewhere with minimal tools and no armor.

Just a bareknuckles survival adventure.

Maybe even tonight??

Alright...because I'm likely to be fairly busy for most of the next week, I just went ahead and snipped off a few minutes of the end of the video and (sorta) fixed the audio in Final Cut Pro, and am now in the process of transcoding the video so it can be posted to YouTube. Since it's likely to take at least a couple of hours and I'm disinclined to stay up very late tonight, it'll probably be up sometime tomorrow, either late morning or in the afternoon when I get back from work.

Whoops! Seems I forgot to post my answer to the question about a do-over.

I look forward to checking out the first video anyway.

EDIT: It's up! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LIC881Qo_Q) You can watch in glorious 360p, until YouTube finishes processing the higher-res versions.

Ahh, yes. Riding horses in general is laggy and jumpy as hell. I figured this was just a typical multiplayer performance issue that everyone had. I don't think I've ever had a smooth ride on any of my horses in multiplayer.

'twas me. I need mycelium for the park, and the mart price was just a wee bit high. ;)

I'm going to get a bit rapey this weekend with the desert and the Nether, but before 1.7 drops I'm going to put a portal out there and bring some Mooshrooms back to town. Who knows if we'll ever find one again with all the new biomes coming up.

2013-09-08, 01:04
It was mostly luck, with a bit of remembering roughly how far the damn things were from spawn in the other worlds.

I decided tonight to just get it over with and build the portal. It's not a direct path, but I needed to find an area in the Nether that looked like it went all the way to the top bedrock. That way I wouldn't be building walkways and spending tons of loot right before the wipe. I tunneled up to bedrock, and after that it was a pretty easy (albeit long) path to get out there just clearing out netherrack.

I trekked 4 Mooshrooms back from the island and built a Soup Farm next to the Meat Mart. Please, no shearing (they'll turn into normal cows) and no killing. But, if you want to breed some for your own or just to let some loose in the wild, have at it. :)

I'm pretty sure it was just MCEdit but I don't recall. I haven't done it in a very long time. Last time was pre-tekkit so I'm not certain it will work here. I did it via CLI though. I'll figure it out and let you know. Maybe later tonight or tomorrow.

Won't be on the server for a bit, because it updated me to 1.6.4 today without any kind of prompt asking if I wanted to or not. I'm not quite sure how to go back like with the previous launcher. =/

Brad
2013-09-19, 14:00
Looks like it might be a few days before we update. Bukkit doesn't even have development builds ready yet for 1.6.4.

We will probably also be waiting a while when 1.7 drops because Mojang is doing some significant code refactoring. Hopefully the Bukkit dev team is already hard at work with the snapshot releases.

Hmm... Now that I look at it that way, I wonder if the Bukkit team will just skip 1.6.4 and hold off until 1.7. I haven't seen any announcements either way.

You don't wanna hold off on 1.6.4 cus it's a minor change but it will save our generated structures. If you were to migrate to 1.7 right now the nether fortress (and possibly villages and definitely witch huts) that you'd already visited would poof. course I'm not sure that there are any structures that we need to save : / BUT YEA.

Brad
2013-09-20, 10:29
Right... I just read about the details last night and it's a rather strange fix. Apparently the structures are retained today just fine. The specific problem is that the metadata that marks those structures as regions where certain mob types can spawn (such as blazes in nether fortresses) is not retained before 1.6.4, and Mojang was too lazy to write a migration into the 1.7 update (despite having done this several times before).

Phase 1 of the RC started!

Brad was having a laugh a few days ago about how many blocks of sod I had to lay for the park, and I said "pheh! wait until I start laying fences for the rollercoaster!" :D Um. That was meant to be somewhat of a joke, but now that I'm doing it it's serious fucking business. :\ :|

3 stacks of raw wood make 8 stacks of fence. Raw. Wood. 8 stacks! Gah. Imma going to be spending all my bal on trees (and glowstone) apparently. :)

*edit: that curve above cost ~22 raw wood, if you were ever thinking about using fences for anything big.
*edit2: even as expensive as glowstone is, I think it's worth it for the night view. Just look at that light blend. So nice.

So I was out donkey hunting in the NW plains area and found a few horses. For now, a have a wild horse sanctuary next to my place. Please, no taming. Leave that for the guy that had to drag their dumb asses through the Nether while avoiding blazes. ;) (sadly, not all of them returned intact :|). I'll go through and check for the best ones and thin the herd a bit later.

Speaking of horses, I was reading up on speed and stats for the beasts, and it popped that an even faster transit system than minecarts between old 1.6 spawn and new 1.7 spawn would be horses. Maybe we have a corral with 4-6 horses at each end of the tunnel and just use them for back and forth. Sounds like it would be loads quicker and we wouldn't have to worry about blocked tracks or potentially crashing into someone on the way there/back. Just a thought. :)

2013-11-14, 19:53
Quick question for you torch placers: which side do you put the torches on when going into a fortress/cave to find your way out? I do "left in" (for the next dude), "right out". Is that what everyone else does?

Reason I ask is that I put a portal out at the Far East in order to find some goddamn rare as hell donkeys, and when I got to the spot in the Nether that I guessed was about right, there was a fortress in the distance. When I made my way out there I found it had already been mostly explored (by who and how I dunno, it's way the hell out), but the torches seemed backwards from what I normally do.

Am I the backwards one? Given, if it's a cave beneath my home I'll just place them willy-nilly and just remember landmarks, but I was trying to be a good citizen this time and I may have got it backwards.

So, what's the standard that you guys/gals use?

SpecMode
2013-11-14, 21:47
I use precisely the opposite pattern: right on the way in, follow them on the left on the way out. I don't remember exploring any fortresses other than the one closest to the spawn portal, though.

709
2013-11-14, 21:59
Ah. Maybe we should all adopt the same pattern? Right In, Left Out? I'm sure I could change my mental in/out remembering key. "Right in the hole, Left out of," umm.. hmm. I'll think of something.

"Left In" feels natural to me though because it reminds me of staying in my lane on the road. Not a wordly solution, obviously, so whatever the majority is used to I'll adopt. :)

turtle
2013-11-14, 22:08
