I peruse the Minecraft subreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/) and am fascinated by the "renders" that people make of their builds.

Is this something that you can do only if you're a mod?

I'd really love to see some renders of our places.

One of the render effects is "toy camera" - take a look at this rendering (http://imgur.com/SKz9h8b).

What places would you guys like to see rendered... from which of our worlds?

Something perhaps.... like this? ;)

Scary candleteeth!

It's not something you can do in-game, but I might take requests if people are interested. Note, though, that decent-looking shots take a LONG TIME to set up and render. This example of Rexy took ~7 minutes to render after spending another ~20 minutes twiddling around and running a few other test renders to get the settings how I liked them.

Here are a couple of other quick test shots that didn't turn out as well:

Oh yeah!!!!

Keep 'em coming!!!!

Definitely looks best with some foreground/background going on.

I'm trying to think of places that are super-iconographic for us... I suppose a lot of them are from the previous builds, the previous worlds.

I understand about the render times - you can lose a LOT of time just setting up a shot.

Will let others pop in with their suggestions/requests.

you're doing this in blender?

Brad
2014-01-26, 10:07
you're doing this in blender?

As backwards and goofy as Blender's interface may be (*shakes fist*), it would be nice if this was using chunk exports to Blender because at least the render times should be a lot faster there. Nope, this is using a Java app called Chunky (https://github.com/llbit/chunky) that has implemented its own ray-tracer. That said, it's still a very impressive piece of kit when you consider that it's largely one developer's work.

Please! :) Even though this is rather time consuming, it's also fun getting the setup just right, and the output is usually so pretty. I have all of the previous vanilla/bukkit worlds available for use.

Also, to put into perspective how slow the rendering engine is when dealing with actual light sources instead of just the sky, that last image inside the Grande Theatre took ~10.5 hours to render overnight (maxing out my 4 cores at 100% on this ~3 year old 2.8GHz i5) when configured to use only the torches as light sources. And it's still grainy! Another 10 hours maybe could have smoothed it out better. The other images took roughly 10-15 minutes of render time each using just the sun.

My only fave places are my lava skull complex and my mountain scraper home.

I think it would be neat to see Skyranch from Bridgeport, not sure of best view, though the better ones are with a wide angle lens and foreground elements with focus set in midground.

Sure thing! Maybe tomorrow!

Any particular requested resolution/dimensions?

Brad
2014-05-27, 21:51
Also, as you may have noticed, the renderer doesn't seem to handle stacking a cobble wall post on top of a stretch of cobble wall. It doesn't know how to connect them. If there's already an intersection on the wall, it connects the post above just fine. I hope that makes sense.

Just FYI. Not sure if you'd want to make any changes to accommodate a prettier picture.

Eh, the cobble fence thing doesn't really bother me all that much. The overall image looks pretty enough, I think. :)

1920x1200 resolution if that's workable (if not, a smaller render at the same aspect ratio would be fine), from the same point of view as the original render.

Much appreciated!

I didn't forget! :) It's rendering now, but it'll take a while. I'll post it in the morning.

I had to redo the camera setup because I didn't save any of the previous scenes, but I think I have a reasonably close facsimile.

But seriously you should totally try playing Minecraft. All the images you see rendered here are things that we've constructed in-game on our AppleNova server. If "building" isn't your thing, then there's still fun to be had adventuring, fighting baddies, and collecting resources to stay alive.

If "building" isn't your thing, then there's still fun to be had adventuring, fighting baddies, and collecting resources to stay alive.Or just walking around and taking in the sights. There's really no pressure to "play" at all. Everyone is more than happy to give a tour, and even if you just want to fart around for a bit, it's really interesting.

Minecraft isn't at all like some of those other multi-player games where you need to "level-up" to be as good as the other players. You'll be as good as us from day 1, and we all have extra tools and armor to get you going.

The other stuff you'll learn as you go, but for the most part it's all very intuitive. Lava is hot, water will drown you, if it's chasing you it wants you dead, etc.

It's the easiest game on the planet, and it's entirely up to the player if they want to try something more challenging. If not, no biggie, the quality of the game doesn't change.

Lastly, I've never experienced a game with a bigger "you need help with that? ok, on my way" crowd. It's just nice. :)

This got me thinking - we've usually (well, in a lot of the worlds) had a hotel available for people to claim a bed near spawn.

Is it too late to move one of them over? bobsky's or Brad's PO would be most likely given their dual-purpose. The gherkin would be cool, but it's just a hotel (though lovely :p).

[edit]: the spot behind the Ender Memorial might be perfect, if whammer gives the ok to build over that small wheat farm. I don't think he uses it anymore, but check to be sure.

Also - apologies for the individual posts. I'm on my phone and have limited machine access this month. :\

I'm with those guys. Come on in. Have a seat. Stay a spell.

We promise not to chop your head off … yet! :p

No, really. I once thought Minecraft was the dumbest thing on the planet, until a friend convinced me to try. Now, I'm hooked and have never played a game I'm more passionate about. It's like Lego's … with zombies! :D

We'll hook you up with some armor and food and a sword, show you around. It'll be awesome! :)

You can be a builder, an adventurer, a hunter, a miner. Whatever you want. Build something you could never afford to build out in the real world (Star Trek Enterprise, perhaps ;) ), go on an adventure to explore that swamp over there, have a look at hell (my favorite adventure in the game), hunt zombies, explore abandoned mines, find yourself a kitty cat in the jungle. There can be a point with a goal, or not. You can build a fancy house, or not. You can tag along on one of our many adventures, or not. The game can be terribly focused, or completely pointless. Which direction you take is up to you.

I loved Legos as a kid, and still do. Minecraft is like digital Legos.

I loved the exploring and adventuring of Halo. Minecraft can be that.

Like The Legend of Zelda? Build those places like Brad!

Cut, carve, chop, dig, build, whack, hunt, fish, drink, eat. It's a giant, unlimited digital playground. Well, maybe a touch limited, depending on the server's hard drive! ;)

I built a towering glass globe, Grey built an amusement park, Brad built the Star trek Enterprise (as you've seen  ). Some have ventured out into the boonies to build fantastic mountain-top retreats. You can walk the long, scenic way (over the river and through the woods) or take a shortcut through the burning, dangerous Nether (made safer due to the group's efforts). Be a digital purist and find all your own materials, or mine for valuables and trade them in the mart. Be a solo artist, or take part in a group build. Take a hike on your own or team up with others and hold hands as you prance through the daisy's!

AWESOME

STUFF

There are only a few, simple rules (http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?t=36437). Follow them, and the sky is the limit (well, until you reach level 255, anyway :D ).

Correct, no animals or entities in general (that includes paintings, item frames, etc.). The programmer behind Chunky recently mentioned on his dev blog, though, that he's working on entity support. So, maybe we'll have that working in a few months!

I'm also still open for requests if anyone has something you'd like to see rendered. Name the place (and world) and give me an idea of roughly what time of day you'd like to see it in.

Went on a nostalgia trip early this morning...finally found a backed-up copy of my original SSP world (from before I started playing on the AN server). This is my very first Minecraft build:

Very nice. I wish I was able to keep my very first pre-AppleNova worlds. :\ It seems they got torched somewhere around the time when the game started allowing you to name worlds in a list instead of the hard-coded save slots. I'll have to try to find my oldest one.

That being said... happy christmas in July! More retina display resolution renders of our worlds for everyone!

Man, I'm such a slacker. I made a bunch more pretty pictures back when I was all over this thread a couple weeks ago, but forgot to post them all. More posts incoming as soon as they upload! :)

Last but not least of this series of renders is actually a composite image. No matter how I tried, I could never manage to arrange a satisfactory single shot containing all the entries in the Trail of Towers. I think this joined image is a fair compromise! :)

Whoops... looks like that last one bumped the thread to Page 4.

There's lots more images on Page 3! :D
