Forgive me, but I'm new to the Internet (apparently).*

So today I'm nursing a cold and I sat down to watch the latest update of one of those multi-player Minecraft "to the death" games.

This one featured six 3-player teams and the playing area is bounded by a giant wall, so you have to stay inside.

The only rule I know they have is that you can only use golden apples to replenish your health.

The player I was following got killed off, so I looked up his partner, who also happened to have a YouTube channel with the same Season/Episode postings.

At some point there was an encounter with another team and I wanted to see the fight from THEIR perspective, so I looked them up and sure enough THEY also had posted their game.

You see where this is going, 18 players, all with YouTube channels, all posting 20-minute videos (cued from server announcements) from their perspective.

Each team is using a voice-chat thing like Ventrillo (or whatevs) so they can talk in real time.

There are a few of them are more interesting than others, and some have fancier production values, but it's a great bit of entertainment when you don't feel like actually sitting in our world and building little lego buildings.

They're up to Season 15, which is the one I just finished watching.

Here's the breakdown of their channels:

UHC is fun to watch! The first Mindcrack stuff I started watching was UHC season...6? 7? Something like that.

I subscribed to a bunch of members' channels after that (Etho, Kurt, Pause, Beef, and Zisteau) and I still keep up with what they're playing now (not just Minecraft – their other videos are entertaining, and frequently hilarious, as well).

drewprops

So what ELSE have you been holding out on us, Spec?? HUH??!! HUH??!!

I'm going to try and get some sleep and will be watching Season 14 along the way. Hmmm... which channel? Pyro is young and asks annoying questions. Maybe Vechs. Any recommendations?

I started with Etho for the cool stuff he builds, and Pause/Beef for their collaborations (they play a lot of adventure maps together, and their videos are absolutely hilarious). Any one of those three would be a good place to start.

I just saw the funniest one where Vechs and Zeisto hear two other players run right over their hides hole. They crouched, to conceal their name tags. A few more episodes pass and they hear them again, this time IN their mine!! They go an entire episode without talking as they stalk the other two guys. Classic!!

In UHC mode, caving is no joke. Forgetting to shift (to hide your nametag), getting sniped by a skellie, or neglecting to watch that last step (it's a doozy) can ruin your day real quick-like.

drewprops

They must have pretty decent machines to be playing the game AND capturing the video in 20-something minute segments over the course of a game. During this particular team's Season 14 run Vechs asks Zeisto about the longest game and the reply was around 4 hours(!). That's quite the commitment!

The other thing I noticed about this team's sequence was how Vechs would every so often drop a homoerotic pun about wood and shafts and such to Zeisto, who would uncomfortably reply with "yeaaaahh...." (or no reply at all)... no idea if that was for real or some inside joke but it was amusing nonetheless.

I don't think we all have beefy enough rigs to record ourselves in such a game, but it would be fun to play something.

I really like the sound plugin they were using - stereo sound, so you could tell where other players were in relation to you, and as they got further away their "channel" was reduced in volume... so you could tell when you were too far away from someone, or when another team was nearby.

Spec do you want to let's try this some night? We could get some people to play. Pick an area, everybody starts off with zero levels and zero inventory...

I just followed one team in season 14 and they were SUCH AMAZING PUSSIES.

As bad as I've been in the past I'm not even that much of a wimp in this game.... I kept yelling at the screen and telling them to go do stuff that they weren't doing... wasting SO many opportunities.

They made it to the final set of teams by sheer cowardice, they didn't even have a BOW between them because they were such pussies.

BTC lasted longer than these idiots and he had a brewing stand and potions and a golden apple and all sorts of shit.

Such a waste.

I watched season 13 last night from Seth's perspective. Both good and bad in that it was entertaining, but I randomly picked the guy that won and had to sit there and watch the entire season at once.

drewprops
2014-05-06, 23:37
Ha!!!

Yes, it's kind of more fun to watch the ones who get killed then switch teams to the people who killed them, to see how it went down from their POV.

Last night I went in and started a single player world in survival mode (normal) using one of the cartoony resource packs and I've found that I'm slightly braver, having watched people being such pussies on these UHC game.

Now that I know that Seth is the winner of 13 I may pick anybody BUT him to see how things went - I do like Zeisto a bit, might watch him. Dellphi told me one of the players he likes but I've forgotten who he said.... I think maybe Etho?

Time to watch!!!!

FIGHT!!!! ;D

Nitpick: it's spelled Zisteau. :)

Yes, I discovered this after several unsuccessful searches last night!!!!!

Lucky I didn't spell it "Zesto", as that's an Atlanta-based fast food chain from WAY back.

Last night I started Season 12 with Zisteau and Pakratt, and without spoiling things I can say its been an EXCELLENT adventure as compared to the two guys I watched in Season 14.

This would be more fun if they let Vechs design the world first. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy watching these guys (though I watch the Forgecraft crew more often), but it's not quite as fun as watching Vechs have maniacal laughter over his creations causing torment. ;)

You can watch most of these guys play through Vechs' Super Hostile series if you search for it (just search vechs super hostile or zisteau super hostile in YT - you'll find it). Also, the Super Hostile maps are ridiculous, though should be played on the version for which they were released (seriously, a couple of them were so full of rage quits it wasn't even funny). Watching Zisteau handle them is hilarious, because he starts building roller coasters into them and whatnot. Vechs has done developer commentary on a couple of the maps and what inspired him to do things certain ways, how he manipulates the vanilla game mechanics, etc. Whichever one had the Hissing Sands area was terrifying to play through. Tons of creeper spawners in a sand and glass filled area with lava above. One creeper blows, and you're kinda SOL unless you were wise enough to farm the hell out of Fire Protection potions. Fun stuff to watch. :)

I'm partial to watching the Forgecraft videos like what Direwolf20 does, but more so the others with whom he plays. Dire does YouTube vids, but Jadedcat, Slowpoke101, Tahg, Soaryn, and Aureylian all stream on Twitch. I'm still convinced Slowpoke has the most calming voice in the universe.

Oh, by the time they start posting, the season is already over - they play through the entire game in one sitting, but it gets broken up into 20-minute episodes for posting to YouTube.

You still don't find out who wins until the last episodes go up, of course, but there's no realtime stream or anything to watch – you have to wait until each set of episodes get posted.

Watched Vechs and Aurey. Aurey typically streams with Direwolf20 and company. Strange to see her doing things that don't involve pink (literally, the modding community has adapted to make certain things stainable as pink just for her). I love when Vechs gets giggly, lol.

LOL!! Okay okay okay, I see that now!!

I just finished watching Ethos' first episode of season 16 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLXW_XxNgXg) and he.....

...just ran the hell off from everybody and started exploring the place, got stuck out in the lightning storm that hits on that first episode and so he digs down and by golly he finds freaking DIAMONDS before he even has an iron pick, but he soon enough finds iron in a mini-chasm that is remarkably devoid of monsters (maybe they were all spawning up above, in the rain?) - anyhow, if this team can reunite they'll probably have a bunch of stuff. Ethos is a good person for me to watch, to see how fast he goes after things and doesn't mess around.

Okay waitaminute... holy crap.

It's so terribly funny, how out of tune I am with the popularity of this game.

Mindcrack Server has a 12 minute newsreel catching you up with the latest news on their server?? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPIQF4L-TaU)

What's REALLY FUNNY is that I know one of the people who plays on their server, or at least as a guest.... seriously, that video is whacky.

Imagine if WE had a weekly update on our server.... this past week would have racked up the views!!

My only mention would be "....tune in to watch Captain Drew run from more mobs!!"

Captain Brown Pants?

drewprops
2014-05-24, 09:56
LOL, they're not brown for just ANY reason!

While I have a relative who played for an asian nation's televised video game team nearly a decade ago it never occurred to me that these players on this Mindcrack server might generate enough content for someone to take the time to create a 12 minute long report on their weekly gameplay (much less, in the form of a televised news report!!).

I didn't realize (until now) that these people are some of the "rock stars" of the Minecraft world... or that video games could generate this level of interest.... but look at me, watching their videos and learning their names.

Wild.

I wonder how much YouTube revenue they generate?

LOL!! Okay okay okay, I see that now!!

I just finished watching Ethos' first episode of season 16 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLXW_XxNgXg) and he.....

Neat! :) I just spent the last couple of hours watching a few episodes. Using the recent snapshot's world border feature and then shrinking it is a pretty clever device to keep people on the move.

It makes me want to see what it would take for us to have a similar sort of tournament on our server. It would of course have to be a new temporary world that would live only for the duration of the game.

/me wanders off to experiment...

drewprops
2014-05-24, 13:50
Yes, the shrinking border thing is pretty wicked cool.

For one or two seasons they used a plugin that allowed them to chat in real time, in stereo. The volume would change depending on your proximity to others, and in several cases you could see people detecting other teams nearby and crouching to hide their own name tags and sneaking up on the other garrulous teams... it's pretty hysterical stuff.

A tournament would be AWESOME.

...

RowdyScot
2014-05-24, 14:22
It'd be fun! :)

Brad
2014-05-24, 20:56
/me wanders off to experiment...

So, it doesn't look like it would be too hard. We would have to use a vanilla weekly snapshot server and client with a new world, and to start the game once people are all online, I'd execute some commands like this:

/worldborder set <the starting size>
/worldborder set <the final size> <duration of time it will shrink to that size>
/spreadplayers <x> <z> <minimum spread distance> <maximum spread distance> true <list of players>

It could work for team play or every-man-for-himself style. I'd also punch up a bunch of /scoreboard commands to get some rankings up.

SpecMode
2014-05-25, 04:29
I would totally be up for this. If we do teams, though, voice chat would be almost mandatory, so that'd be something that needs to be setup in advance (unless you intend to constantly type chat-whisper warnings to your teammates as you're being mercilessly hunted down in a cave ;) ).

So far, this season, I'm intrigued by each player's fundamentals. It seems like several are playing quite sloppily, which may be a result of the pressure of the competition, but good behavior shines through for others.

With the world border pushing them all toward the center I am betting that it's going to be a shorter season.

One player is finding TONS of gold, while some teams can't seem to catch a break... and another team wastes time leaving signs for an opposing team (I bet they're never found).

Fascinating to watch :)

There was actually a pretty sizable gap before this one and the season previous, I believe; at least a few months, IIRC. Then again, there have been cases where only a couple of weeks have elapsed between UHC seasons, so it can be hard to predict sometimes. You're just browsing your YouTube subscriptions, and BAM! Half a dozen new UHC episodes pop up out of the blue.

This was the first time I watched a Mindcrack UHC played in real time.

Guude's Twitch channel was too annoying to listen to because his Twitch settings kept making that godawful racket any time a viewer paid to subscribe. Is there a way for ME to turn that crap off?

I switched to Nebris, who is generally a good PVP player, but he's shit when it comes to teamwork. As a result I saw minimal community interaction, so I feel a bit cheated. I assume that Beef will upload his recording to YouTube later, but I may not watch it since I know how UHC 32 turns out.

One thing that was different: I used my AppleTV to watch the tournament on a television. The interface is clunky, but I made it work.

Some really impressive builds, top notch redstone work, and an actual narrative where the moon grew larger over the course of the season until it was so ridiculously huge that it was blotting out the night sky. The ending was a bit lame and disjointed, but the entire effort was a lot of fun to watch.

Okay, the fifth episode of the Double Life series by the Hermitcraft gang dropped a day or so back and it contains one of the most epic kills of all time.

Grian dropped a stalactite at just the right moment, killing Rendog and ending his play in that limited series.

I highly recommend watching the entire series, from multiple players points of view.

If you'd like to see the kill, here's a compilation of views that someone put together:
