NOOOOOOOOO! They'll kill it with DLC, sponsored mobs, micro transactions, and all the other BS that made me swear off video games forever!

It's so ugh I can hardly stand it!

That...would destroy everything I love about this game. Quite frankly, that might finally break me from it after 4 years.

Microsoft owning the game will not ruin it for me. However, Microsoft meddling in the game might!

^^^

If nothing else, we can keep the server running the last great version that isn't MS all over it.

Thoughts on what this means for the future of Minecraft? Surprised there wasn't anything here already.

I'm so hammered right now i couldn't care less. Carry on then. I'd thought it worthy of a stand alone discussion, but i'm also not steeped in the AN MC culture, so entirely prone to missing things.

No no! Merge the other replies into this one! I thought it was worthy of its own thread as well, but some silly or doofus (can't remember which one) decided to put it into a catch-all thread. Please remedy oh hammered one.

[edit]: it was the doofus.

Well, this is very official now. (https://mojang.com/2014/09/yes-were-being-bought-by-microsoft/)

How much money was the company bought for?
Microsoft acquired Mojang for a smooth 2.5 BILLION dollars.

Is the game going to change? Will we still be able to make videos, mods, awesome builds, and all the cool stuff we’ve created over the past few years?
Minecraft will continue to evolve, just like it has since the start of development. We don’t know specific plans for Minecraft’s future yet, but we do know that everyone involved wants the community to grow and become even more amazing than it’s ever been. Stopping players making cool stuff is not in anyone’s interests.

I do really hope that this isn't a bad move but glad to see as of now they plan to keep growing it. I guess we will just have to see what happens over time.

Lets also hope this doesn't become some lame "get the X-Box version; it's better" ploy by Microsoft to sell Windows and X-Box. I love this game, but I have no need for BS in my life. :\

I could hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth from another forum. You all have my condolences but I am now glad I never started playing this game because I know if I had, I would have a serious case of the Angry Mondays today.

Done deal. Annnnd... MS is set to ruin another good tech idea.

Available immediately on XBone, other platforms "coming soon."

Just can't help but see this as a bad move for those who enjoy it. Does Microsoft not understand that the public perception is they ruin things?

So Notch AND Jeb are leaving?

...

Just Notch, (and Jakob and Carl) officially. Although bear in mind Jeb has probably made a bunch of money so Microsoft will need to make it worth his while to stay.

I haven't seen anything indicating Jeb leaving, not that it isn't possible. Sadly, I expect that we will all have to buy new versions of the game each release cycle. Minecraft 2.0 is a new game and you have to buy it for $50. If you want to run a server then you'll need Server Edition R2 for $499.

This.

My biggest fear, and also the reason I will wind up using older versions for as long as possible. Should Microsoft force the issue, I will stop playing. Sad, but MS is known for these antics. :\

So this is a new feature and likely brought on by MS though not for certain. We now have to agree to eula to run a server:
Mongo:mc181test Tony$ cat eula.txt
#By changing the setting below to TRUE you are indicating your agreement to our EULA (https://account.mojang.com/documents/minecraft_eula).
#Fri Nov 28 14:32:08 EST 2014
eula=false

That kind've started pre-CraftBukkit-drama, where Mojang were putting the kibosh on pay-to-win servers. Now it's official.

turtle
2014-11-28, 16:12
That makes sense. I can totally see that happening too. Up to this point there was no "signature" to say you agreed to the ToS/EULA, now there is since you have to specifically change that to "true".
