View Full Version : Minecraft 1.10: The Frostburn Update!

A little update, but I'd take 3 or 4 of these a year over a yearly (or more) update. :) Some neat stuff, a few new mobs and a handful of new blocks:

Magma Block (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Magma_Block), Nether Wart Block (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Nether_Wart_Block), Red Nether Brick (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Red_Nether_Brick) and Bone Block (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Bone_Block):

All creatable by existing loot. :) The Magma Block can be found in the Nether (though we'd have to go pretty far out to find fresh land) and the Bone Block can be found in the wild underground, making up Fossils (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Fossil).

New mobs include Polar Bears (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Polar_Bear), Strays (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Stray) and Husks (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Husk):

http://www.greychristian.com/AN/800px-Polar_Bear.png

Passive unless cubs are near.

http://www.greychristian.com/AN/800px-Stray.png

Ice skellies. Shoots tipped arrows of Slowness.

http://www.greychristian.com/AN/800px-Husk.png

Desert zombies.

A few other neat things like mesa mines (dark oak, large chance of gold ore), more biome specific villages (and the rare chance of a zombie villager village), and little things like super-tall mushrooms, fun hanging-sand animations and some new sounds.

Structure blocks too, but those are admin-only goodies. Anyways, check out the full list of updates here (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/1.10).

I doubt we'll need a world trim this time around since nothing much changes besides mineshafts in the mesa areas and fossils beneath deserts & swamps. There's enough unexplored area still where if you really wanted to you could find them. :)

You still playing that silly game?

Haven't had much free time, so haven't been in much. Still, I'll see ya' 'round! :)

Right there with you. Got two books in the works, we're getting ready to move the shop, the garden is growing. You know, all the less important things. :p

Crap I'm going to have to wall off the desert by the mountain to keep out the Husks.

I didn't realize 1.10 was out now! How long has it been out? Maybe we should look at upgrading the server for this too.

709
2016-06-09, 09:35
Just yesterday, but it was a wham-bam of snapshots/pre-releases. I'd love it if this was the new norm, like back in the Beta days.

The server should be OK to upgrade, I'd think. There might be some texture pack issues (I think Brad tweaked the color of the netherbrick to be redder, and now we have red netherbrick) but nothing major. I think we get the default textures if they aren't included in Brad's pack, and none of the new ones are horrible. ;)

I wouldn't mind a trim to make some of the new underground stuff a little closer to home though. Cuts down on the world bloat.

709
2016-06-09, 14:34
We could almost use the same trim as last time (https://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?p=795310#post795310), but we'd need to add 2 more chunks center-south to keep the extended rail. Other than that I don't think there's been any new building outside the edges. (?)

I hope we don't lose our freaky little ghost villages and temples!

OptiFine has smooth dynamic lighting now too (in 1.9.4), and the effects are pretty (https://i.imgur.com/NrEx1wW.gifv) amazing (https://gfycat.com/GlassAthleticCrustacean). (source vid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Zo7vAPTWg) w/extra weird hype)

We shouldn't. I think those IDs remain. I also hope not to lose the underground monument that I plan to turn into a Necropolis.

Yeah, I don't know how any of that works. I think this cross between 1.8/1.9 was a nice accident, but I have no idea why it happened.

I understand the seed thing, but I have no idea how they got crossed. That is, just the village/temple/monument data. It's weird. Villages and temples apparently keep the same xyz, so some are buried and some are on stilts in 1.9. :| I haven't seen your underground monument yet, but that's another oddity, since when I boat out into the ocean where a monument was before (in 1.8), it's just nasty fishes swimming around. The same thing happened when we went from 1.7 to 1.8 (try swimming off Drew's dock downtown ! ) but that a monument survived underground is really unique.

It's funny, because when I read a post from someone that has a strong opinion about anything in LoL or DotA I'm 99% of the time thinking either "what in the fuck you people" or "i have no idea what is going on here".

I imagine it's similar for the AN lurkers in any MC thread, even though MC is ridiculously easy. :D

One block high glass panes no longer serve as a fence. You walk into them and bounce up and keep walking over them. Keep that in mind for those who use it like a fence.

Edit: Looks like that is true for more than just glass. I'm auto-climbing everything now. Is this a setting we can change or a carry over from the mobile version of the game?

Edit 2!: L looks like Auto-Jump is enabled by default. Turn it off in Controls and you should be fine:

Is we updated yet?

709
2016-07-13, 12:21
We are. :)

Make sure to install the latest OptiFine! Flaming arrows are amazingly useful (and fun) now, and holding your torches in the 'shield slot' acts like you have a headlamp on while caving. It's great and extra scary if you forgo planting torches along the way. :D

turtle
2016-07-13, 12:39
Did the texture pack get updated for this release or was it built into the 1.9 version?

709
2016-07-13, 13:03
Still using the 1.9c pack but the new blocks are using the MC default textures. They're not that bad (except the awful default brick layout is present in the red-netherbrick). The netherbrick could go back to a bit browner now, but no biggie.

turtle
2016-07-13, 13:10
OK, my concern is that the maps are going to have an issue rendering the blocks. We will see how it goes. :D

For some reason it's already complaining about 'assets/minecraft/textures/blocks/usb_charger_side.png' missing. That's a thing?

709
2016-07-13, 13:35
That was an April Fool's (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/1.RV-Pre1) block... no idea why it would be in 1.10. :err:

kscherer
2016-07-13, 13:36

Edit: Drat, Grey beats me again. :\

turtle
2016-07-13, 14:26
That's funny, so these blocks exist in the game still or are in the map making program and shouldn’t be anymore? Now I guess I should try to figure this out...

kscherer
2016-07-13, 15:49
Did the Nether also get updated?

709
2016-07-13, 16:08
Out past the explored edges (wherever those are ;) ) I'm sure it's updated. The magma blocks are so easy to make though that I doubt it's worth the trip out there. Maybe just to see what they look like in the wild. :)

kscherer
2016-07-14, 17:43
Boy, I don't know. Considering the quantity of magma cream needed vs. the immense quantity of the end product out in the Nether, I wouldn't waste any of my cream. In one quick trip (and about 30 minutes of mining) I filled a large chest.

By the way, when you factor time/mining/etc., magma block is by far the cheapest light source in the game. A good pick and a little bit of time and you have the cheapest—and ugliest—lights available. Granted, they have to be "started" by placing some other light source next to them, but once on, they're on for good, even after you remove the starter light.

I motion for Brad to find a nice texture that makes them palatable to use in architectural projects. Maybe something reddish?

709
2016-07-15, 11:49
Granted, they have to be "started" by placing some other light source next to them, but once on, they're on for good, even after you remove the starter light.I'm guessing that's a bug that's going to get fixed. Would be nice if they were a little brighter by default though... 3 is pretty pitiful for magma.

kscherer
2016-07-15, 12:01
Well, by "started" I mean "really bright". They exhibit a 3 brightness by default, but can go up to 9 if a torch is placed atop them (or right next to) and will hold that brightness after the torch is removed.

I would like to formally request a nice texture for this block. Considering their hugely wide availability, a nice texture would eliminate the need for glowstone in many circumstances. They would be super-handy for architectural lighting purposes.

I would like to see something with perhaps a gray border with frosty light somewhere between glowstone and torches. Maybe even a four-square pattern.

Edit: Endermen spawning in the Nether seems to be a new thing.

709
2016-07-15, 13:08
It's a bug tho. (https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-102162) Whether it gets fixed soon (or ever) is anyone's guess.

http://www.greychristian.com/AN/newsavanna.jpg

There's a nether portal in-between the S and SE major portals that leads to this nice little Savanna Village. Friendly people, all kinds of crops, and a Librarian holding court in his own hut selling Mending books. A mere 32 emeralds for everlasting* life. Bring extra, if he runs out of Mending books you need to buy other loot to refresh his book handling. Fair.

*not everlasting. If you're busting blocks with no xp return, you don't mend your kit. If you're on the losing end of a battle, Mending won't save you. Be warned.

Brad
2016-07-27, 21:45
Minus the fences and lamps, is that a naturally spawned village?

(If so, I didn't realize they were using the orange wood. Looks great!)

709
2016-07-27, 22:38
The village was naturally spawned there, yes. It was explored in 1.9, so it regenerated after the wipe as it was. A normal (oak), small village. But without the biome flavor. So I helped them to kind've fit in – replacing the oak with acacia and all that. They didn't have a Church, so I made one. They didn't have a Library, so I made one. I added an additional farm, because it fit, and then another because beets. And some other stuff.

That said, it is still pretty natural. I tried to make it as legit as I could but still adding a few nice touches. :)

Also there's a MENDING guy out there. Like, the rarest guy. A bit expensive but hey.

turtle
2016-07-28, 00:41
Nicely done! I'm looking forward to getting out there are seeing it in the game. Maybe I can make it by there tomorrow if I can get into the game. My summer schedule has been brutal.

709
2016-08-31, 16:03
Gotta say, I'm loving the village upgrades as a new distraction. :D

There's an Oak Village on the water not more than a couple stone throws SE of the Savanna Village, with another Mending guy @22 emeralds. I though they were super-rare, but maybe these 2 villages are just lucky. I upgraded it and put a portal in (just S of the SE nether portal).

Also, I see on the map that Turtle's been helping one in the North. Looks like a refurbished old one from the map... fun stuff. I'm going out there tonight for sure. :)

turtle
2016-08-31, 17:10
Yeah, I found two up there that were void of villagers and up in the air. For those two I added catwalks and fencing to help the villagers stay safe. I also put villagers back in them. I meant to mark them on the map with signs but forgot to do that. I'm going to head back to them and others that I can play with some too. The villages are a fun distraction.

What are those mossy cobblestone buildings? Like the one up north by one of the villages I played with.

Lot of that happening. I think Grey found an ocean monument in the middle of the desert.

709
2016-09-07, 14:14
I didn't, but it's roughly 700/-4300.

There's a portal in the 'upper NSEW Nether tunnels' if you head North. Just shy of the first 500 light marker. That leads to a displaced jungle temple in the Overworld, then you just head NE for a short bit. Bring milk! It still has all 3 of the big-daddy fishes.

709
2016-09-07, 15:39
Also, there's a double-village out in the ocean at -2500/-1700-ish. Could be fun. :)

That is one cool monument in the desert. On one hand I'd like to see it modified. On the other I'd rather it stay pristine. Even the sand above it. I'm not going to mess with it though I'm thinking of adding some lighting inside it.

Ken has one awesome Wither grinder built. Even if you never put a Wither in it you won't regret heading out there to see it. It really is amazing.

Though, Ely had something very similar close to his place before the upgrade, and it went *poof*. Apparently monuments don't play by the same rules... look no further than than Drew's beach of Evil Fish.

Ken has one awesome Wither grinder built. It really is. I love that he's extended his castle architecture to some of the surrounding builds, even if underground. :)

kscherer
2016-09-22, 22:05
And they're going to remain underground, too. So much of that area is already consumed by Ye Olderstein, the King's stables, iron farm, etc., as well as Tall Town. The land east of Whammerstein is relatively pristine, and I plan on expanding the horse pastures and the stables, so I don't want to use the above-ground spaces for big projects, especially with that giant, unfinished beast off to the northeast. :p

So, underground she stays. More is to come. Not entirely sure what, yet, but come it must! :)

Brad
2016-10-05, 20:29
Grey, you must be some kind of mind reader. I was going to ask you to mark off an estimated area where 'zilla's feet would land, and — I'll be damned — you did exactly what I would have asked before I got to ask.

709
2016-10-18, 18:47
So Bryson, I was putting a thing in the NE corner of the Museum Complex to act as a kind of 'edge' like the Shuttle does in the SW corner, and I decided to run the road north. I'm going to connect it to the Colourwalk road you're building, but I'll have to extend it a bit. Shouldn't affect your plan though. :)

Brad
2016-10-18, 23:35
Oh that reminds me!

I've been meaning to ask about this since, well, about two weeks ago, but I've been buried in work since then. Would it be OK (and this is aimed mostly at Bryson) for me to slide that road northwards to align with this other road (in black)? Rather than move the *whole* thing, I was even thinking about moving just the long part over the water and putting a diagonal bit to connect with the path that continues towards the mountains.

Kind of like this:
