So, my ankle is kind of fucked up. I'm not sure there is any better way to explain it than that. It feels kind of like a sprain, but I didn't sprain it -- at least not that I know of. Here's what happened...

About six weeks ago I woke up in the morning, got out of bed, and almost fell straight to the ground because my left ankle couldn't support any weight. There was a throbbing pain on the upper outer part of the left foot... like if you traced a line back from your little toe, and right before the ankle moves up into the leg: right around there.

Now, I don't have a car, and if you're limping and have to take a breather every ten steps, there was no way the subway was happening. So I decided to lay off the ankle for a few days. That helped, it began to get better, and two weeks after the original incident I was walking normally. I hadn't done anything the night before to provoke the injury, and I have no history of sleep walking.

Ok, so about four weeks ago, maybe three, I was on a trippy substance while writing some code and occasionally staring blindly at my monitor for reasons some can probably relate to. Anyhow, I was sitting at my desk all night, and when I get up to move in the morning to maybe go to bed, I notice my ankle is screwed up again. I can hardly walk. Now, I KNOW I never left the damn desk, and I know I didn't like take a hammer to my ankle while there.

Ok, so two weeks later it's almost all better, until this morning. I woke up this morning and it was a little sore... and over the next six hours it got to where I was hopping around on one foot. It definitely looks swollen again, and I didn't do anything to it. I found if I apply pressure around the ankle it relieves the pain... so I currently have a sock tied tightly around, perpendicular to my foot's direction. It still hurts like a bitch though.

I don't have a car, and I don't really want to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. Right now, I think I'd go for some percocet and a shot of jager. Anyone have any idea what the hell is wrong with my ankle? I realise I should get it looked at, but until then... :grumble:

No, but having some aspirin will probably help in the short term Ñ it'll help with any swelling. Probably.

Yeah, I did that. Still feels like an M1A1 rolled over it a few times.

Sounds like karpal for the foot... hmm. There's a tendon in that area, isn't there?

I don't suppose I could cut it out and just be done with it? I bet then I'd get the really good pain killers, like Roxanol ;)

I wouldn't do that until you can get a nice cyborg replacement.

Faster, stronger, better to type with when you're feeling lazy...

we need more info...

do you have high arches
what kind of shoes do you wear (no, this is not one of those, "what are you wearing" posts)

if you have high arches you can't wear flat shoes...as much as i like converse chuck taylors, if you have high arches you need arch support in your shoes

is the ankle hot to the touch when this happens? if so, i would get checked for rheumatoid arthritis...does the pain go to other joints?

ps...we all know your perchance for drink and non-prescription meds, so none of us can totally rule out the late night fall that you don't recall

It sounds like you have some kind of hairline fracture that starts healing up for awhile, and then, from stress on it, comes apart again.

Keep your foot up, and keep ice on it. Ibuprofen is good for the swelling. Too bad someone can't bring you a pair of crutches so you can stay off of it.

Ok, my arches aren't terribly high, and I've always worn shoes that support it well. I don't think that is a problem. It doesn't feel terribly warm to the touch. I mean, I have the sock around it, so it's a little warmer now. It doesn't hurt in the joints, actually. This is more of a pain... I dunno, it feels like a throbbing pain just under the surface level.

As far as any substances I may do, ok... the first time I was sober for at least forty-eight hours prior to the incident. Today... well, I've been sober, unfortunately, for the past three, maybe four, days. The trip I took the second time was on a substance called MDA which is nothing like Acid, and it definitely didn't like leave me wandering in a K-Hole. I think I can safely rule out that this did not occur under the influence of any substances.

If you look at the attached picture, I have circled the area of my foot where it hurts. It seems a bit swollen too...

Ok, so I just got back from urgent care, and they took a few x-rays. They say there isn't any bone damage, but are referring me to an orthopedic surgeon that specialises in the foot. The working theory is that there is ligament damage, and that the initial damage may have occurred while cycling. Which is funny, because I haven't had any crashes this season or any situations where I think I would have injured my foot.

Now it's probably going to take me weeks to get an appointment with this doctor, especially because I'm busy during the week from 1000 to about 1700 :grumble:

What an incredibly freaky post!

I'm not making this up: yesterday, while in Target, I'm walking along and this pain in my left foot, on the outside, just shot out, and it went up my leg, to my butt and it actually seemed to scramble me for a sec. I got dizzy and leaned on a shelf. And it seemed like my hearing got muffled for a second (voices around me sounded distant and muted). The remainder of the time there, I was limping horribly. I got home last night and noticed that my left ankle area is swelled quite a bit larger than the right.

Granted, I broke my left ankle 6 years ago and have some things like this (swelling, aching, etc.) still present, but yesterday, that foot pain - out of nowhere - sounds EXACTLY like what you described, LoCash. The outer portion, where the little toe is? Started there, felt like I was going to fall under my leg, almost like, for a second or two, my left leg wasn't really there and that I was just going to tumble over like a tree.

The oddest thing.

I have no idea, but I just thought it was freaky that the EXACT symptoms/situation hit me.

The one thing we share in common? I'm at a computer WAY too much, so I wonder if I'm sitting weird and somehow compressing or pinching a nerve in my leg or butt that is somehow manifested in a weird foot thing yesterday? This past week, especially, I've been at my work G4 for 8 hours, THEN coming home to do freelance stuff for another 2-4 every evening.

If YOU find out something from the doctor, please pass it on!!! It has to be some sort of nerve thing, I'm guessing, aggravated by prolonged sitting or leg-folding (or dangling), etc.?

i assume those are work hours. you may want to consider modifying your priorities. is it more important to get paid, or to stop living in constant agony?

No, those are class hours. After this summer is done I will have finished up work on another degree. Right now, it's more important to finish that work than be in less pain.

You may have developed some form of an auto-immune condition (God knows, it's the desease of the 21st century). Take advil and keep the weight off the foot. If they did not give you prednisone, you are OK. Just let the thing work itself out.

Wait out the pain.

this is right, my wife just did the stairs in a bad way, and, short of surgery, "they" are telling me the same thing.

LoCash, is your ankle feeling any better today?
