...I would just like to note for the record that the iTMS kicks ass for a variety of reasons, but none spelled out better than by posting a small cross-section of the 62 songs I've purchased since its inception.

In no particular order:

America
Lauryn Hill
Blind Melon
Glen Miller
Coldplay
Steely Dan
Michael Schenker Group
The Chili Peppers
The Spinners
Talking Heads
Yngwie Malmsteen (couldn't be helped)
Stevie Wonder

I just love the fact I can pick two or three songs I really love from some artist, and download high quality copies in about 8 seconds and start listening to it. Burn it to CDs for my car, whatever....

iTMS isn't perfect but it still fucking rocks and that's all I hafta say about thayat.

Post your cross-sections. Do it I say... if not for your country, for Steve and the growing power that is RDF (coming soon to a QT player near you hopefully). Which is a great idea for Steve: iTMS Apple Event Broadcasts!

Ha, good thread idea. I think the same thing: it trumps any other service out there, and I love being able to get ONE song, when I want it and OWN it.

I bought my first song ("Outta Space" by Billy Preston) just over a year ago and only have 43 (seems like it should be more). But you want to talk about a "cross section of musical tastes"? Well...

Billy Preston
Guster
Chris Isaak
Marty Stuart
Destiny's Child (I think Kelly Rowland is the sexiest thing on two legs)
Atlanta Rhythm Section (I shit you not)
Eurythmics
Susan Tedeschi
Wild Cherry
The Ataris
Queen
Overseer
Fountains of Wayne
Poco
Dexy's Midnight Runners (take a wild guess which song...)
Mark O'Connor
Jason & the Scorchers
Lou Gramm
Squeeze
Paul Young
Keith Urban
Randy Newman
Pam Tillis
Willie Nelson
Vince Gill
Chet Atkins
Dire Straits
The Triplets of Belleville ("Belleville Rendezvous" from that movie)
Roy Orbison
ABBA

Country, bluegrass, blues, rock, pop, oldies, funk, country-rock, 80's, alt country, gospel, soundtrack and one-hit wonders.

 Pardon me while I pick myself off the floor... holy jumpin... talk about your blast from the past. They were HUGE when I was a kid living down there. I think a couple of my siblings and their friends actually went and caught a couple concerts at Chastain Park at one point. Sweet... ARS... the past lives on.

....
Dexy's Midnight Runners (take a wild guess which song...)

acK!

....
Keith Urban
...

My fiancee would appreciate that choice. We've seen the guy twice in concert (mainly before he was mega-CMT-star-man / Playgirl pinup). He's a pretty cool guy... plays at county fairs and stuff like that, not just big venues. Gracious to even the most hick-like Wisconsin crowds... gotta give him some propage.

PS - I forgot to put Skynnard in my list.

Well, how neat...Keith Urban is in town here - Chattanooga - tonight, at our big annual Riverbend festival (http://www.riverbendfestival.com). Yeah, he's quite a talent and a smokin' guitarist too!

My friend and I saw him a couple of months ago when we drove up for a Saturday night Opry show/broadcast in Nashville. He came out and did three of his songs, acoustically, with three other band members playing a banjo and mandolin and percussion. He and Ricky Skaggs were the highlights that evening.

:)

Yeah, I'm sure his looks don't hurt him at all, but the cool thing is he's got the chops (singing, writing, playing) to back it up, so he's got more going on than your typical Hot New Countryª "beefcake in a hat" hacks who just stand there and sing (*cough*Tim Mcgraw*cough*Kenny Chesney*cough*).

:p

Urban - like Vince Gill and Marty Stuart - has my total respect!

Yep, I agree completely. We've seen Tim McGraw too and I have to say Urban is the more talented and engaging performer. He does, as you say, play a mean guitar.

There's this totally annoying trend in country right now, where all the women look like Vivid porn actresses (go to cmt.com and scroll through some of the artists pics and see if you don't agree...although I'd pounce on Martina McBride (http://www.cmt.com/sitewide/assets/img/events/2004/grammys/grammys04_mcbride02-280x336.jpg) like a dog on a bone  ) and all the guys either take the "redneck stud" approach (the aforementioned McGraw and Chesney) or the Matchbox Twenty/Sugar Ray reject look (Rascal Flatts, Emerson Drive, etc.). The "young guns", I guess.

Then you just have plain ol', low-rent idiots like Toby Keith and Montgomery Gentry who are 112% redneck, but their labels marketing department tries to put hip clothes on them, gives them a cute spiky haircut and trims their goatees just so (don't think for a minute that any of those clowns do this stuff on their own... ) for an unholy combination of white-trash priss. I call it neckosexual (a redneck, prettied up to look good in videos, usually to hilarious - albeit unintentional - results).

:p

Crap, I hate country music.

Wait, let me clarify that: I hate contemporary, Top 40 country music...which ain't really "country" at all (adult ballads a la Celine Dion, light pop, 70's boogie rock and borderline novelty shit are about all you'll hear on a typical Top 40 country station these days...and it SUCKS). A few exceptions, but probably fewer than I can count on one hand.

You can't be country in country music.

You're not kidding. I know exactly those trends you speak of as well, even though it is my better half and not me who is the big country music fan. I will occasionally sit down and watch some CMT with her or the CMA or whatever... Nashville Star (acK!).

I can't say I like the Neckosexual trend at all, but it bothers me less than teh Matchbox 20 thing. Men dressed like they belong at a fraternity party (or worse, Miami Dance Club), singing country just doesn't ring true to me. And I'm not even a fan, strictly speaking.

Country music has been going downhill for years. I was so upset when Johnny Cash died. Now that man knew a thing or two about country music.

Some would argue that he *was* country music. Or the essence of country at the very least. Kenny and Willy just didn't have Johnny's aire. (Why is it that all the bigtime country singers are called by their "kiddy names" anyway?) No "John Cash" or "Ken Rogers" or "Will Nelson"; always gotta have the "y" in there. I think they should've used their short names, and guys like McGraw (with their trophy wives) should use the y. Timmy McGraw. Perfect.

:D

Anyhow, there is a little-known track off of an old U2 album called Zooropa where Johnny sings the lead; it's really a pretty interesting combination though I didn't like it at first.

The Refreshments got mainstream radio airplay with that one track. They made it farther than a lot of other bands that deserved to make it, so I consider the Refreshments winners. That Banditos song was some catchy ass shit in the 90s, not to mention the "King of the Hill" theme.

Their new CD Americano is a 4 star CD from www.allmusic.com. They are touring the country and right now are opening for John Fogerty. Sooner or later, they will make it big. The singing is better than Petty or Springsteen, the music destroys either of the two as well.

I like modern country. Rascal Flatts and Chesney. I'm not big fans, but it's some of the only country I like. Granted I never was one for twangy county music...and you can't call them county really. Either way I like them. But yes, they aren't county :-D

Still much rather listen to top 40 county then top 40 pop ;)

But give me String Cheese Incident, The Big Wu, Keller Williams, or any other good hippy band any day!

I'm a huge country fan. Of both the "top 40" type and the classics. Bluegrass, dueling banjos, all that kinda good stuff. :)

I've been looking all over the place for big band music, i.e. stuff from the 1930s-1940s.

I haven't been able to find any CDs anywhere but iTunes has several albums(?) with 30 tracks per album for only $9.99

Mark me as an iTunes Music Store Addict. :D
