I am going on a trip to remote western China this summer, and because I shoot in raw with my D70, I need some way to store the massive ammounts of pics I take. What choices do I have.

Does anyone have experience with the Epson P2000?

Epson P2000 (http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=49164278&BV_SessionID=@@@@1176010480.1113571964@@@@&BV_EngineID=fadddfhhhkklbfdmcfjgckidnk.0)

it's $500, more than a month's salary for me. anything else out there that does the same job? I probably don't need such a nice screen.

Thanks in advance.

it's $500, more than a month's salary for me.

Their site says...
Our Price: $499.99

Do you not have a job? :p

Why not just get a 60gb iPod photo for 449 (419 edu discount), and then the photo adapter for 30 or whatever? You'd get a sweet iPod, with 3/2 the storage. Why not go this route?

Of course all this assuming you don't have a laptop and can't just buy an external HD, which I know you do have a laptop, and can buy an external HD, so i'm pretty disgusted you would even think about anything else.

Well, I'm a university student so I only work 7 hours a week, so $500 a month isn't bad is it?

I do have the latest powerbook as well as a 160gig external, but there's no way i can bring them for my trip.

The iPod is a bad choice because it has dead slow transfer, drains both the camera and iPod battery (reviews say transferring a gig drains 3/4 of the ipod's battery) The iPod also will not display my pictures on the screen. iPod may be a good choice for the casual photographer, but definitely not for people who are serious about it.

Fair enough...out of curiosity, why can't you take your computer on the trip?

Well, it's mainly for the weight problem, it's like a backpacking trip all the way to the western end of China, the province of XinJiang which is next to Kazakstan.

While there will be outlets in the main cities there, I'm not so sure about how easy it is to find them in the more remote places.

Having a huge powerbook is not only heavy,(needto bring adaptor too) but really bulky and there's such a high risk of damage.

I have a D70 also and I Really like the
Epson because of the Large 3.8" screen. Its also is mp3.
Also, I have several 2.2 gig microdrives. You can have thousands of pictures with them. If you want to spend the extra cash, you can now get 8 gig compact flash cards also. I think they are about 850.00. In Large/Fine setting you should be able to get about 2400 pictures on a 8 gig.

hi elvia,
Do you own the Epson? buying compact flash cards is a very bad idea because they are expensive! I'll probably be taking 1500 pics a week, all in RAW (~5.7megs each).

I just would like to know what the battery life is like...

Steve No, I don't have one but it is the best one from everything I have read, you can copy 13 1 gig disk on a battery charge. You can also have an extra lithium ion battery handy too.
