I am looking for a good solid backpack that isnt too expensive, under $100, and which doesnt look like a laptop backpack. I need it to carry some books as well. I already have a sleeve that i love (zerosock "15) and want a backpack that it can fit in. So far, within my price range I like the kensington saddlebag sport, kensington contour backpack and the belkin freeport 2.

Any recommendations? Do you own any of the above bags and if so could you please offer your advice? I prefer simplicity in use and color. I dont see why any one would want to pay $250 for a bag. If you can tell me why you would want to please do so. Thank you.

I have a backpack from "The North Face" (Borealis model) and am happy with it.
Only use it for a 12"pb, but a 15" would fit in too. It leaves you with plenty of room for books and other stuff and is easy to carry.

Try the Terminal Bag from Dakine (http://www.dakine.com), I am enjoying mine very much.

Check out the Nylon Backpack by Incase. I've had it for a few months and love it. It doesn't look like a laptop bag and it's simple. I carry my 15" powerbook and a few textbooks in it around campus. Got it for about 70 bucks. Just look around and you can get a good deal.

My hubby uses an Ogio. He really likes it and it's got plenty of room for stuff besides the laptop. They can't be too expensive because my son-in-law has given us two of them. I'm guessing they are under $70.

Try SpireUSA (http://spireusa.com). I've had the Meta for 3 years now, and it's still kickin' butt.

Or, if you like messenger style bags, try: Chrome (http://www.chromebags.com)

Crumpler (http://www.crumplerusa.com/cartIndex.php?catId=5) also has a lot of HIP offerings -- if you can get past their 'annoying-ass' website.

I had the official Brenthaven backpack for the 15". I was glad to get rid of it while selling the laptop. It was well built, but I don't recommend it because of three reasons. Internal space felt too small and badly designed, carry system sucked, and cost really too much.

I would pay 200€ for a backpack or a bag again (and I'm a student with not much income), but it needs to have consistently good design. Non-laptop backpack and laptop sleeve combination can be pretty good and you can choose from a zillion genuinely good packs, while laptop packs are generally not good packs. The way I see it, I am not going to drop a backpack often by accident.

Targus laptop backpacks seemed a bit bland, plasticky and mediocre, might be worth the price though. Same for Samsonite if you find one that suits you.
Crumpler seemed to have elements of fresh and good design, and was well built, but the design compromised usability. I did not see this from pictures, only from handling the backpacks. The models I saw were overpriced considering the design problems.
Booq seemed interesting on the web and I'd look at them hard if I wanted a new laptop bag or backpack.

Manufacturers that I trust in general are Haglöfs, North Face and Jack Wolfskin. The common factor is that they make serious trekking packs. That puts them in a position of also being able to design a good city or general purpose pack.

Good backpacks and bags last forever. I am using a backpack that is about 10 years old. I had to go to a cobbler to have a few euro worth of repairs made once, this was about two years ago.
