any name will do I guess... but you need to provide a name and email to invite a user, but you should be able to change the name once you get it.
of course I don't currently HAVE any invites... so this is just mental masturbation at this point...

I've heard they're just a webmail service right now.. When they add in POP3 access (access through an email client) then I'll sign up. Hopefully when it gets popular someone'll write a Mail.app plugin for it like that dude did for accessing your hotmail, Daniel Parnell.

It took about two weeks for me.
I'm guessing it has something to do with usage or traffic. I don't get or send many emails and I've only gotten two invites to give out.
Others get five or six invites in one shot. :confused:

What version of Safari? Gmail is only compatible with the latest version. 1.2.2 on Panther. If you don't have that...you gotta use IE because I don't think any other browser for Mac will run it.

Firefox does work with gmail as well ;)
and once i get my invites i'll give a couple away for peeps who haven't gotten any, if they haven't already opened up gmail for the public by then. :p
Try Firefox. I had problems logging in with Safari, and so I just powered up Firefox and it works fine. They say they are working on Safari support.

Not really on topic, but I found a nice little menubar app that checks your gmail account for new messages. http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~natan/gcount/ . Nifty. Once I get some invites, I'll be sure to offer a few to those left out. :)

I invited one of my friends yesterday and he already got a couple invites even though he only sent a few messages! One of my other friends who doesn't use it that much got 6 invites in one day!

One of my other friends who doesn't use it that much got 6 invites in one day! definitely seems random to me. i dont know how long i've had gmail, but i dont use it too much. mostly b/c i didn't have any notification about new mail, but i found a firefox plugin (GMail Notifier, i think its called) which tells me now. and i happened to pop into gmail today and i saw a thing on the side about 7 (now 5) invites. i dont know how long i've had those for, or if i just got them.

It is googles email beta. You can only join for now if you get an invite. You can get up to 1 GB of storage. It is pretty sweet. Just beware it is a web based email service. It won't work in mail(for now hopefully apple will fix that). I got 6 invites so pm me with full name and current email address.

Actually I tried just the email address. It demanded the first and last name. I have no more left except one that is reserved for silentechoes since he pmed me. The other 4 were given away at another site since demand is low here.

You don't need their full name. Just type in anything and it will work. I used "Silent" for first name and "Echos" for last name when I sent an invite to SE.

I have three invites, which I will be releasing in a time-release cycle based on the number of dishes I have to clean on three particular days. Every Sunday for three weeks, I will count the number of dishes I must clean that day. Silverware is worth one point each. Bowls, plates, and glasses are three points apiece, and large items (pots, pans, skillets) are 6 points. I will add the point total, multiply it by the day of the month, and post a number here. Then, when I receive multiple requests for invites, the person with the post count nearest my "magic number" will receive the invite. Repeat three weeks and there go my invites!
