View Full Version : I really want a mac...need help
I have been looking a lot at macs and their prices, both new and used. I figure its a matter of time, and I am on a fairly tight budget and would have to sell my current pc laptop and am looking at getting an ibook new or ibook or powerbook used. I like the widescreens on powerbooks although I do not feel it is a critical feature. Having said that, I was looking at older powerbooks that were in the g4 500 mhz range with the widescreen, but even then it seems that apples retain their value very well. I liked the deal on refurbished ibooks on the apple website, but they do not ship to canada. All of the above leads me to feel that I should buy new or refurbished, but something I am having a tough time figuring out is whether or not apple will update their ibook and powerbook lines soon. I havent seen any change in a while, but now I see they are shipping the current ibook line with tiger, so I am wondering if they will update soon at all. They recently updated the imac, emac and powerbook lines, so I would have thought they would update their notebooks soon. Will the ibook line be updated to fully take advantage of tiger? From what I have read, it currently would scale itself back due to the graphics card not being powerful enough. Also, will the ibooks get a widescreen? Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.
I'm expecting the iBook to be updated by the end of May. I don't think it will be a major redesign, if it is updated by the end of the month - if it is updated at WWDC or Paris or something, I'd expect a major redesign - and I'm not expecting a widescreen display, redesign or no. But stranger things have happened...

There is some serious talk about Apple releasing a wide screen iBook. If time isn't of the essence, it might be worth a bit of a wait.

Well...I am using windoze... :\ Is that enough of an emergency?
When you say "updated to fully take advantage of Tiger" be aware that the difference is one effect, namely the ripple thingy in Dashboard.
Personally I think it's uglier than some that I coded six years ago, but what do I know? I have an iBook and no Tiger.
Regardless of whether an update is coming, the level the prices went in January is pretty reasonable. I got mine with Bluetooth and a 60GB HD, and it's hard to see what they could add or change that would make my iBook look significantly worse in comparison.
Vertical space is at a premium already, I don't think widescreen is a good idea in this size class. On the 15" it was good to have, but for the price difference between 12" iBook and 15" widescreen Powerbook you can get a huge external display which is a lot better than Powerbook's.

All I'd want is another laptop that fits everywhere that my 12" iBook fits. If it can carry a spiral bound notebook, it can carry my iBook.
I'm afraid that widescreen iBooks won't be as simple to transport. I'll wait to see what Apple comes up with.
