The coolest thing is that it's wide open, to anyone. Anybody has an honest shot. And as much as I'd like to be the one, there's part of me who hopes the grand prize goes to some hard-working, talented designer or artist who's lusted after a Mac but has just never been able to afford one. Someone who would genuinely appreciate, and use, it.

That would be really cool.

...but if that poor, unfortunate bastard can't win it for whatever reason, then it may as well be me! The race is on...

Better to just throw him out the window, then steal a six pack of Molson as you walk out the door with your new laptop and iPod. Tell you what, I'll go in on the deal, you can have the iPod an 70,000 songs... I'll take the laptop, 30,000 songs and the pack of Molson. I just want enough juice to put some money back in the bank to start a new business and something drink at the motels on the way home.

I woudn't care about any exchange...I'd be thrilled beyond words with a 17" PowerBook (I'd actually hold a raffle here and give away my current 15").

Besides, you could always murbot it on eBay (murBay?) and take the cash to get what you really wanted.

actually, in theory, it would be worth it as it gets close to buy 2,000 songs at once to be the one who hits the mark. of course, now 200 people are going to realize this and that last 20k shoudl go real quick.

Watch some Apple-hating dipshit win the big prize. What a waste.

The real Apple-hating dipshits won't even use Apple products, period. They won't touch any Apple software, won't even look at iPods, etc, so they won't even be using iTMS in the first place. Believe me, I know a few of these people, as I suspect a number of us here do.

Last night I was up at the moment that it hit 95,000,000 I purchased a 39 track album(for $8!, and it's good stuff too!) thinking it would give me a pretty good chance, I also timed my purchased based on the rough per second and per minute estimate I had. But when I went to purchase, I got an error from the music store, I only managed to get about 5 out of 39 songs until after the 95,000,000 mark was breeched, then about 10 more downloaded before I got another error. Now the rest are downloading.

eitherway though, that's pretty lame, I guess maybe the server overloaded or something? because like, in the past 20 minutes, about 100-200 songs were being sold every 5 minutes, but then at the breaking point like 2500 were sold, probably all at around the same time.

seems like there are a lot of people keen on trying to win.

I don't really care, I already have an iPod, but it is still fun to figure out the rate at which songs are being downloaded, and try and make educated guesses of when to buy some songs.

HOM

Apple will begin the countdown to 100 million songs by giving away 50 special 20GB iPods—one to the purchaser of each 100,000th song downloaded between 95 million and 100 million songs emphasis mine

What do you think that means?

psmith2.0
2004-07-02, 19:56
Simple: it'll probably be custom-engraved, to denote the number and all. Perhaps even include the person's name? I honestly never read anything more into than that.

I don't know, that would kinda qualify as "special" to me, to have it recorded that you bought this song, on this day, etc (might help it on eBay!).

Nothing major, just something kinda neat. Especially to whoever won the big one! Maybe Jonathan Ive, Steve Jobs and Danika Cleary also sign it with a Sharpie?

I'll try a couple more times this weekend; that's all the more I'm willing to be suckered in by this. Needed some extra tunes anyway, figured why not?

You know what's funny? They're giving away 50 iPods, one for ever 100,000 downloads including the 100,000,000th. That means there was nothing to win for being 95,000,000, silly Billy.

The official rules confirmed this.

Those 50 special iPods are 20GB. The 100,000,000 winner gets a different, 40GB iPod. Unless the 100,000,000 winner gets two iPods, the only way they could give away those 50 20GB'ers at every 100,000 is to start at 95,000,000.

Hmmm... unless they counted that 40GB'er in with the 50.

Eugene
2004-07-03, 08:39
From the official rules.

One 20GB iPod will be awarded for each Entry sent immediately following the 99,999th song downloaded, until iTunes reaches its 100 millionth Entry. (One 20GB iPod will be given away for the 95,100,000th Entry, 95,200,000th Entry,....99,900,000th Entry). For the 100 millionth Entry, the winner will receive the grand prize: a 40GB iPod, a 17 inch PowerBook computer, and a gift certificate redeemable for 10,000 songs from iTunes (approximate total retail value based on single track pricing: US $13,198).

The Promotion begins following the downloading of the 95,000,000th iTunes song, and ends with the downloading of the 100 millionth Entry (“End Date”). Only Entries submitted in this time period will be accepted.

And just in case...no, the free songs don't count, so don't try to download them over and over. :p

[snip] found the answers (sort of) (http://www.apple.com/itunes/100million/#rules) to my question. Seems that no matter how many songs you buy at once, it's considered one "entry". That doesn't make a lost of sense intuititvely.

If I order and there are 5 songs left to a marker, and there are 6 songs in teh album I order, I should win that marker prize. I'm not entirely sure that's the way it works though. Sounds more like they're going by actual orders placed and not actual number of songs (even though that's the way they've promoted it).

As for notification, it says about 3 days later.

I might just download a song onto my stepdad's Mac sometime - I'm not a gambling person (or a music downloading one, for that matter) but the appeal of a special iPod, a PB G4 and basically unlimited downloads (legal, too!) is certainly great.
