I'm new to this mac business, but I have a 17" powerbook on the way and have just realized that there is no way it will fit in my current laptop case. I'm looking for either a fairly light briefcase type bag with a should strap, or a nice roomy/protective backpack that can hold the pb and a few books. Any suggestions? I am a college student and need something that will keep my computer from being damaged as I bike around campus and go to class, and I especially like the backpack idea because I wouldn't have to carry around multiple bags.

Thanks in advance

Numerous threads have been posted here on the topic. I forgot this myself a few weeks back and posted a topic about it too. I purchased a Waterfield case:

Definitely the ones I would recommend the most. By far. It is expensive, but the quality is unmatched, including by Booq. Hope that helps.

Moving to the Purchasing Advice forum, where you should find several related threads to this topic...

Yup, I just did a search (http://forums.applenova.com/search.php?) using the terms 'laptop, powerbook, case, bag' and found a bunch of options.

My laptop bag (for a 15" pb) is made by Tom Bihn (http://www.tombihn.com/) and I love it. Tom Bihn also sells bags made by Trager (http://www.tragerusa.com/). Both brands have bags specifically sized for 17" PowerBooks.
