I was reading some stuff about ex-Apple researcher Doug Cutting and his work on the Lucence (http://jakarta.apache.org/lucene/docs/index.html) search technology and Nutch (http://www.nutch.org/docs/en/) web search engine and remembered an excellent series of articles talking about the technology behind search.
It's not direct from Apple but it talks about the state of the art in search and, as far as I can tell, very closely follows the kind of thing that Apple has been working on.
