According to Thinksecret, UCLA is going to create a Xserve cluster similar to Virginia Techs cluster. They are going to buy 256 dual Xserve G5. The speed is not mentioned. The cluster will cost around $1 million.

I hardly expected Apple to have any success with the Xserves.

I hardly even dreamed Apple would have this kind of success with the Xserves

This is awesome. I didn't expect anything like it, but I crossed my fingers that the first cluster that was built (VT was it?) would really put Apple's servers and pro machines on the map.

You can't argue with the kind of success they had with the first cluster, so more organizations are following suit. And I couldn't be happier :D

What exactly defines a "cluster?" Can it be composted of as little as 2 computers?

Yes it can. Cluster generally refers to a specific type of computing: each computer providing the same resource so under heavy load the resource is still accessable.

With two computers you are more likely to be using distributed computing (distcc, Xgrid, Shake etc).

So the render farm engine used in Electric Image is an example of "distributed"...

Hey, not meaning to pick, but shouldn't this topic be in the "Speculation and Rumors" forum?
