Hello, I'm an upcoming college student and am planning to buy a new Mac laptop. Currently, I'm running a 900Mhz G3 iBook. My parents have agreed that they will help me out with whatever new laptop I choose. I'm deciding that I want to get the best of the best, and get a 17 inch G4 Powerbook. I told them this and we figured out how the payments were going to work and all is well. When I saw that Apple had their "Student Union" deal going, I decided to upgrade my iPod as well. I am currently using my 2nd gen 10 gig that is filled to capacity. I'm planning on getting the 60 gig iPod. Now here comes the problem. Move in day for me is August 20th. I realize that I will need roughly a week or so before to get everything ordered and set up the way I want it. Now the rumors are coming out of the woodwork about their being new Macs left and right. How close should I cut it on making my purchase? I'm hearing rumor that the Powerbooks are getting a boost and that video iPods are just around the corner. Thanks for the help!
Apple just restructured their iPod pricing a couple weeks ago... don't expect any actual iPod product updates before November.
I doubt a PB will come before August either... all signs seem to be pointing to an iBook update at this time. I assume you're not planning on bringing your PB around to classes? The 17" PB is pretty big. I'd personally get the 15" and put the $300 towards an external display to have when you're in the dorm/apt.

I'm having the exact same crisis. Move-in day is August 17th, I leave a few days earlier, and a Build-to-Order Powerbook could take a good two weeks from order to arrival from what I hear. This puts my "need to order" day sometime this week.
First the new laptops were supposed to come during MacWorld Boston, then the next week, then today, now this week (July 20-22-ish). At what point do I throw down my hands and just buy the Mac (which, of course, will end up being the day before the new Powerbooks)?
If you buy from a Retail store and order 3rd party RAM, you can hold out till a few days before you leave.
That's what I'd do if I was looking to wait as long as possible.
