My grandfather has an old beige G3 my brother got for him. In the last month, it has had major problems twice, and both times it somehow miraculously recovered without actually doing anything to help it. I think the hard drive is broken, because both problems involved the computer refusing to start up and giving the blinking question mark. The first time it fixed itself before I could come out and try to fix it for him, and the second time I brought an OS 9 install CD but it couldn't even recognize the drive. He said it started working after he gave it a good firm smack on the case. I'm not sure if that's a sign of a dying hard drive, but given that it's caused problems before, it just might be. Anyone have another possible explanation, or should I think about finding a new hard drive?

Change the battery. My old Beige G3 minitower eats one about every 18 months.
