Im interested in buying an external TV tuner for mly pb - and wondered if you guys have any sugestions.

all i can find are supper expensive ones that lets you capture and all the stuff.

I just want a simple external thing that lets me watch tv, nothing else. Freeview would be quite nice too.

Dont need it to rewind tv, dont need to to record tv, or anything special - just watch it.

D'oh. I thought you said internal...

Basically, your choices are Elgato or Formac. You can use others if you download open source drivers and programs but they are a mess to install and setup. Not worth it IMO.

This might be what you want:

Their lowest-end, most basic product...just a TV tuner.

I entered in "United Kingdom" in their product search helper (to make sure what I found would be available to you).

I've used the El Gato EyeTV 200 (FireWire-based) and it worked wonderfully for watching TV (also did all the recording stuff too, but I don't if the product above does...although you said you didn't need that function).

You might also want to consider an LCD/TV combo display.
Dell and Sharp have some 19 and 26" and some have DVI capabilities which would be great with your PB. :)

STOP PRESS!

Try Elgato's new EyeTV for DTT (i.e. for Freeview) (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/90901/wo/T354tShiM99x3c7jR4l6iKfSPWv/0.0.11.1.0.6.23.1.12.1.4.0.0.1.0) that is available at the Apple Store for under £100. It's smaller than an iPod Mini baby! I think I'm gonna be gettin' one soon.

I'm interested in using the Elgato EyeTV 500, when I fulfill my dream of a Power Mac G5. :)

I have one. It rocks as long as there is HDTV content.

I find Digital TV to be a bit picky. On 3 stations, sometimes the signal drops out in a show and the picture stops for a moment. You may have stronger signals though. Real HDTV is wonderful. :smokey:

Anyone got a Cinergy T2 / EyeTV?

When I first plugged it in, the light came on during installation, but its never been on since. Is this the same with yours?

I have the Elgato EyeTV for DTT and found it to be fantastic. It worked out at £98 from the Apple store, and use it with my PB. The software if amazing! To be honest I was surprised at the quality, and it has full PVR functionality as well, letting you pause live TV etc...
The included aerial was rather pathetic, but once hooked up to the roof antenna I get all the digital channels. Would highly recomend the elgato EyeTV range.

To 'gargoyle' as far as I am aware the light only comes on when the EyeTV program is actually running. That is how it happens for me.

The Plextor ConvertX PVR (sp?) is a great low-cost alternative to the Elgato stuff. It actually uses the EyeTV software (so you get PVR functionality), and is about $200 USD.

It can actually hardware encode in more formats than the EyeTV 200, including MPEG1, MPEG2, and Divx.

That's what I mean Joe, my light doesn't come on at all, but the T2 seems to be working fine. I live in a quite rural area so I can receive most of the channels off the portable antenna.

well as long as the T2 is working alright, I don't see any cause for concern. I don't really know what could be causing it, but as long as the device still works to get TV, all sounds ok. (That is unless you purchased it just cause you want a random box with a blue light on :) )
