Is it safe to buy a refurb from the apple web site? Or are the headaches going to exceede the $400 savings?

It's safe. "Refurb" means Apple checks it over for problems before selling it again. A refurb may be an open box computer that someone brought home, opened up, and decided they didn't want it for some reason. It might be one that had a major defect out of the box that required a replacement. In any case, if it was returned because of a defect, Apple will fix it up and test it out first before selling it.

So basically they're as good as new and come with the same warranty (and the same eligibility for AppleCare) as a brand new Mac. Go for it!

The only downside I can find, is that you can't configure it, but as long as you're happy with the specs as is, you're all set. (of course you can add stuff yourself)
