On this, the occasion of the death of my beloved slab of titanium, plastic and solder, I have composed a poem.

On The Death of a Friend I Treated Like Shit
by Hassan 'Idris' S, age 32

Goodbye, my thin friend
You were
Good to me

I was a mean shithead to you

And now
You are gone.

I bought the first TiBook in the shop. 'Holy shit!' they said. 'Look how thin the screen is! Look how beautiful it is!' And they were right.

I remember how we checked my email on top of Table Mountain by infrared and a now-obsolete Erricsson. I rembember how you lost the 'I' key, giving you a gap-toothed face I loved all the more, and how I replaced the key with a '[' key because that was the nearest in appearance. I remember when you fell off my chair in the British Library and buggered up the CD slot, and how I fixed it with a fork sitting outside a vegetarian restaurant in Convent Garden, and how ever after that I needed a coin when I wanted to eject a CD. I remember getting a ten minute charge from your battery, and I didn't mind- we were together at least, no? I remember how I took you tens of thousands of miles on an aeroplane, how I put you in a plastic bag inside a courier bag and rode from my house to my Place of Work again and again and again. I remember how my courier bag hit a lamp-post last month and smashed your right hinge to pieces, making your screen intermittent thereafter, and sparks and a smell of burning emit from the hole.

And now you are gone. You have left me here with my head in my hands. I NEED YOU AND YOU ARE GONE.

TiBook, June 2001 - July 2004. Mourned. Gone, but not forgotten.

My love.

When do you pick up Ti's revenge?

'Ti2'.

Yes, that is the one, as a fellow Original Ti PB 400 owner and still user, I think a fitting tribute should be very large and fat. A 17" Alu fully loaded ought to do.

I have tears in my eyes, you friggin literary powerhouse bastard.

:D

Seriously, that is one hell of a sweet write up. Poor little Ti. 2 hungover thumbs up from Canada.

RIP TiBook. I'm sure it will be missed. Replace it with something better, but never forget :(

In honor of your fallen comrade, here's a few shots of what was the worlds best looking laptop at the time. She really was a beauty.

Look at this, gettin me all sentimental and it wasn't even mine. Geez, I can still remember the first time I saw one of these, how bad I wanted one. It's weird to see how different it was than the new AlBooks though. Still, an awesome computer no doubt. Again, RIP PB.

Thread of the week. I think that in keeping with AppleNova's grand tradition of posting poetry on the front page this should be the first thing people see when the check the site on Monday.

Right on. Thank-you for your sympathy.

It's hard for me, because I don't have a computer of my own any more, but in the next few days I'm going to post some images of my Recently Departed.

And then you'll see. What a shithead I was and how I deserve to be alone. "She fell off a chair in the Library. Really."

My Ti867 is giving me looks as I read this thread. :wow:
...After I hooked her up to a set of speakers at a party and blasted iTunes all day in the 85° sun...she takes a licking...but I'm sad to hear yours is no longer ticking :(

Mine once took a dive off the kitchen table after 11yo tripped over power cord, it flew about six feet landed on the back right corner. It is still truckin.

My your companion rest in peace.

Recently my friend dropped his brand spanking new Powerbook 15" 1.5Ghz from about 1.5 feet sitting at the edge of his fireplace. Thank god for him it hit carpet but still made a distinctive and disturbing thud sound. He claimed to have caught it, but that was not the case.

My Ti550 dropped and the hinge was well and truly FUBAR'ed... the paint also chipped off the top case and DVD slot and it began to look well and truly battle-scarred. Thankfully, after a trip to the Apple Store to check my Power Supply, they had the whole topcase replaced and a new screen put in, b/c that was the only way to fix the hinge. Lucky me and lucky Ti550. :)

I still love it heaps - even though I have been told it won't handle GB (iLife '04) or any decent DAW well. :| The battery is now only giving me a ten minute charge as well, but as you said, at least we're still together. :) Someday, next year, I intend to replace it. Hopefully, I can give it a tribute as fitting as you have given yours.

I mourn your Ti400 with you Idris, but also wish you the very best on your next PowerBook purchase.

The King is dead - long live the King.

Ti 400. My lost love. I swore I would treasure your memory, defend it from the passage of time, from affections new.

I would carry your loss in my breast forever, a discreet pain that would mark me apart.

People would say "There goes Idris; he is a man who has suffered. Who suffers."

Well I fucking lied.

Yeah, I'll put flowers on your grave. That's a promise.

My new PowerBook'll remind me.

Won't you, honeybunch?

This little beastie?

http://www.miamihost.net/ims/u/Idris/my%20poor%20g4/beastie.jpg

I really have no idea. I think it looks a little like a salamander.

It was painted on the wall by the girl who lived in my place before me, an Italian performance artist who is very nice. There's a little Pinnocchio somewhere, too.

Damn, though, looking at that picture makes me realise I need to tidy this room a bit. It's a disgrace.
