Yeah, a telephoto zoom is a bit of a specialist lens. I wouldn't have thought it particularly useful for general photography, but any lens is good for something. However, unless it's actually the 70-300 mm Diffractive Optics version it was never even remotely close to $1k.

Right, I didn't mean that it's a useless lens. The poster said he was still a newb, so I was wondering why he'd buy such a long zoom unless he had a specific purpose for it.
