Given your name, I guess you currently use windows?
You could try out something like Copernic Desktop search. Not as slick as Spotlight, but it'll give you a feel for it's uses.

If you're already on the Mac. Not much available. There's launcher utilities like Launchbar, but desktop search is nonexistant. There is Blinkx alpha, but so far I'm unimpressed to say the least.
