Back in junior year of high school, I ran a 4:38. I haven't run a mile comptetively since high school. I'd probably be around 7:00-7:30 now. I'm in decent shape but have in no way trained for middle distance.
Yeah, progress on the mile time is not linear. Getting to 4:30 was my goal that season, and it was really hard. It can take a whole season or more to improve from 4:30 to 4:20. There was this one guy at another school who was running a 4:13 mile that year and finally hit 4:10 at the state champoinships. He then got down to 4:08 at the end of the next season.
Now I'm inspired to try this again. I live across the street from a school, and I think I'll run four laps on their track this weekend just for kicks and giggles. Hopefully no puke.
