Not that you aren't within your rights to openly use wifi, but maybe it would help avoid a confrontation. Take away his "smoking gun" or whatever.

Hiding an SSID is literally just a bit that says "please don't display this" to clients, which clients are free to ignore. Even Apple's built-in wireless diagnostic utility will show you "hidden" networks within range.
