I'd also vote for smooth slabs (think paved sidewalks). Beautify the town! Don't uglify it with gravel!
It's worth the relatively cheap investment, and the resources are fully renewable. There's a cobblestone generator out by the glass structure over the lava/beach, and charcoal grows on trees.
