If an October iPad Air event happens, it should be October 9. Here's the timeline for the next few weeks if so:
9/21: iPhone 5 on sale
9/24: iPhone 5 First Weekend Numbers Announced

10/2: Apple announces October event
10/10: iPad Air released
10/16: Apple Announces iPad Air first weekend numbers during FQ4 conference call, where they also announce cumulative iPhone 5 through end of quarter (likely 10-12 million).
Putting the October event on 10/3 would be too compressed--invites would have to go out next week.
