You must have had one of the large 8s. I just put my 6s and XS side by side, the 6s is half an inch shorter, but that is with cases on (exact figures say the iPhone 8 is 5mm shorter than the X). The seems like a small difference, but it is more comfortable in your pocket.
While I do like the shorter phone, I wouldn't want to go back to touch ID to be honest. FaceID is much nicer to have, particularly if your hands are wet or dirty.
