Those Pencils charged in a flash. I'm sure it uses capacitors as opposed to actual batteries to run them. Been a long time since I used one, but it was really quick to charge even with heavy use.
Maybe it is "
green" because Apple has a stockpile of 1st gen Pencils laying around they need to sell.
