Nope, wrong book there. Lucifer's Hammer is about a comet/asteroid (can't remember which) that hits the Earth and the ensuing lawlessness and destruction. It was co-written by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle (who also wrote Chaos Manor when Byte! was still around ) and released in the 70s sometime.
