What I was trying to say is, a "common" first name isn't at all a bad thing if you have an unusual last name. "James Shrugg" works. "Hermes Shrugg" would be weird. "Atlas Shrugg" would be unfortunate.
I said "character" because I'm not ever going to be in a position to name a real person, but it goes for people too.
