True. They'd never expect someone to retaliate, especially with the speed & intensity that the boyfriend had. They probably thought that he'd stop and go, "Hey there, what are you doing smacking my girl?"
I'm curious as to what happened next, although I don't want to see it. This looks too much like real-world random violence (not staged like a boxing match, or semi-organized like combat) for me to enjoy.
