I made the mistake of going to the local post office this morning, 24 days before Christmas. Yikes, what a zoo...

1. This first one is directed to the Post Office itself: Consider opening more than two windows on a busy Saturday morning during what is probably the busiest, most active time of year for people mailing letters, cards and packages.

That's it for the Post Office. From here out, it's directed at civilians (who play an equally large role in the proceedings).

2. We're in a huge line, back-to-back. It looks like nothing other than a "line of people". There's really no reason on God's green earth for anyone to stick their head in the door and, with a puzzled, "am I really here?" look on their face, ask loudly "Is this the line?!?".

3. If you've got a particularly obnoxious or grating ringtone - a weird sound effect or some horrendous pop or hip-hop song - perhaps you could think about setting your phone to "vibrate".

4. Act like you've been to a Post Office before, and do all your packing, addressing, sealing and organizing somewhere other than the service window.

5. Don't be Mr. Small Talk Taken To Excessive Levels. Once you've conducted your business, received your change and receipt and you notice the long line of people behind you waiting their turn, beat it! Hanging around to engage the clerk in talk about weather, today's college football pairings and inquiring on the whereabouts of other postal employees you usually deal with doesn't help anyone.

Help move that line along, folks. The life you save may be your own.

Merry Christmas!
