To me, the biggest problem with the older U.S. airlines is simply that their unions have gotten shafted so many times in the last decade -- pay cuts, layoffs, callbacks, more layoffs, more pay cuts, etc., etc. -- that most of their workers just don't seem to give a damn anymore. They know no one expects to be treated well these days, so why make the extra effort to prove customers wrong?
