Here's a terminal command you can use to monitor disk access:
fs_usage
You'll have to use
sudo as an admin user to use it (ie. use the combined command
sudo fs_usage). Be sure to close and quit *everything* that you know isn't accessing the disk beforehand because a lot of entries may fly by, making the output unreadable.
