Swapping out the drive into a better enclosure shouldn't be a problem. I'd bet it's just a standard 2.5" drive in the enclosure. Get an enclosure made for 2.5" drives from newegg or something and swap it out.
I have no idea what you're talking about with your "mini USB to regular USB" question.
