I used to have it on the left but I use Tinker Tool to put it on the bottom and have it pinned to the end so I can squeeze in iTunes for the rest of the space. It would be a lot better if I had more than 12" of space to work with but I don't use the dock all that much because using the keyboard is so much faster than the track pad.
