That could be the difference. My strikes, although strong enough to touch down and leave a mark, didn't really destroy all that much. Just a pop, flash, and gone. I have seen some extremely nasty ones exactly like you described, but they were typically farther away (~100 yards).

Touch down, come on. Everyone knows lighting goes up from the ground and then back down again in the time you see it.
