Apologies for continuing to bump this, but I'm finally figuring out that it's common (???) for text editors to be extensible - to allow third party plugins that add functionality. That seems crazy, but then that seems exactly like what programmers would WANT.
Setting up Atom to do FTP requires a download and then it requires you to create a JSON file that contains your login information - and I'm getting the feeling that this is more widespread that I realized.
I really liked all of that being "safely" (ie "invisibly") kept inside of my old html editor (like Coda) because it seems safer somehow (??) but maybe not? Heck, I don't know.
Still making the rounds to see how different text editors handle FTP....
