The company line is that the Universal transition is killing them. Office is old. It isn't simply a matter of recompiling in Xcode like it is for a lot of Mac software, they've had to rewrite a lot of code and drop a lot of legacy code.
VBA is a perfect example. The VBA interpreter for Mac is fucking ancient. Like, 10+ years old. They can't just tinker with it and have it work, they would have to rewrite the whole damn thing. And since their already embarrassingly behind schedule, they just nixed it.
