i'm stumped. that's like the least likely of all possible situations I could have conceived. ping fails but port 80 half-work.
you could retry telnet on port 80, and type "GET /" (without the quotes) and hit enter a few times. that's a simplified version of a web browser right there. the default home page for the site should be sent to your telnet window. if it works, it'll be raw html, and http headers. that would reinforce the idea that its a browser issue. i'm not sure really what else to do though.
