Yes, they sold a lot of Macs but they absolutely didn't do well financially, and they also did a lot of stupid mistakes.

Sculley were good in the beginning but couldn't handle it when he focussed too much on the Newton. Spindler was a disaster, and Amelio started a trend that Jobs took further.
