The very essence of civil disobedience is a willingness to be punished for one's actions. In such cases, "letting them off easy" is often counterproductive to the cause. More often than not, it's the
punishment that brings attention to the issue rather than the underlying act.
If this guy is sincere, he should be perfectly happy to accept whatever punishment is doled out to him. Otherwise, he's no different than a million other pranksters who only show remorse when punishment looms.
