I just read that (from my RSS feed) and though back to the days when I ran a WWIV BBS. My story wasn't far from his actually! I originally called other boards with a 2400 baud modem. Eventually I got my mom to get me my own phone line. Then I set my computer up 24/7 hosting a BBS. I networked with WWIVLink, WWIVnet and FIDOnet!
I have no copies of it that I can find. I know at one point I had the core saved to 3.5" floppies. I'm going to have to dig to see what I can find.
Becoming a paid sysop with WWIV is what got me introduced into coding actually. Turbo C++ IIRC was what we used to compile the edits for the BBS code. My board got shut down when I joined the Navy.
edit:
Apparently I'm a digital hoarder.
