Thomas Jefferson put an incredible effort into writing the Declaration, and Congress debated until they felt it perfectly expressed their frustrations with England and King George III. Once they put their names to that document, they signed their own death warrants, and they had far more to lose than the common man (and some lost it all).
They were leaders extraordinaire!
