Digital currencies are just the idea of a fiat currency run amok. It's really ok in the long run, but it requires certain features that are not presently there -- like price and value stability. Instead, it works like a speculation market on a currency based upon gold or some other limited resource. Crazy levels of inflation/deflation, where one day you can buy a pizza the next a sports car. Irrational irrationality.
