Sampling the same expression of Scotch from different years is especially interesting given the massive rise in popularity over the past couple of decades. Distillers are having lots of trouble keeping up with demand, so much that they are releasing ever younger whisky or diluting it down to the minimum 40% ABV. Laphroaig 10yr is such an example of a whisky that was further cut down to 40% from 43% recently. Using the Laphroaig example again, they had to drop the 15yr expression altogether to keep up with the demand.

Other tricks they use to speed the aging of whisky is to use smaller barrels. Bourbon barrels are smaller than sherry butts. Some distillers are experimenting with even smaller barrels still.
