This is what you think Apple is doing, but it has no basis in reality. Apple chose AMD because the Radeon 400 series is brand new, stamped on a 14nm FinFET process and comes with a significantly lower TDP than Nvidia's newest Pascal mobile chips. The GTX 1070M for example has a TDP of 120W. That's almost as high as the MBP's entire system power consumption.

The problem is really just battery capacity.
