Ended up buying a Linksys WRT350N v1.0 to use with DD-WRT and so far it's performance is virtually identical to a WRT54G at 50 feet straightline distance and a couple of thick walls in its way.

I think I'm going to end up using this in my basement where the XBox 360, Wii and HTPC reside, and get a second AirPort Extreme base after Macworld to use in a WDS setting.
