Machine has been sent off for repair and refurbishment and I won't pay for it.

The Genius was very forthcoming about the issues surrounding this machine and openly wondered why there wasn't a program in place to address the obvious problems he encounters with this model on a weekly basis.

It being a 2011 model I won't trust that this won't happen again, and he suggested a menubar app called GFX Card Status to run on it when I get it back - the app allows you to entirely avoid using the discrete graphics card if you choose.

Once the problem hits its final state (as mine has) you can't boot into the full OS because the video components apparently invoke the graphics card(s) in a way that prevents any video from appearing on-screen. The lower-level tests that they run on the machine worked because they apparently don't use the card (the mechanics of all of this are only theoretical to me, I don't understand the architecture involved and the processes by which the components talk to software, etc, etc).
