I would expect them to be smart and not kill the iPhone hype before it's even released. A widescreen multi-touch iPod would make a perfect gadget gift for the 2007 holiday season though.

By your logic, Apple should just stop selling all iPods now, and force people to either buy a competitor's product or the iPhone as the only iPod option? We wouldn't want anyone to go get an iPod right now, since that could kill the iPhone hype and take away a potential iPhone sale!!!
